I'm currently in love with the Triumphal Chorus and March from Aida.

It just SOARS. Wow. Verdi.

I particularly like the triplets leading into "Gloria" at 1:39 and the female vocals section from 2:25 to 3:01 and then of course the bugles and build up to a truly grand climax. Stunningly beautiful and powerful.

Good thread.
I know nothing about opera. I’ve never been to an opera or listened to one. But I’d like to get into it.

I just know that I love the way it sounds. It’s a great genre to turn on around 5:00 or 6:00 in the evening to a nice glass of red.

I’d say to start with Mozart!

Searched this out when I heard it on Seinfeld and I really like it. Not an opera fan per se but I appreciate it and listen from time to time

This aria is heard over the credits of my all time favorite movie, Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949). KH&C is about a guy getting revenge against the relatives he feels wronged him. As I don't speak Italian, I didn't know until fairly recently that the aria is also about revenge.

Il mio tesoro intanto
Andate a consolar,
E del bel ciglio il pianto
Cercate di asciugar.
Ditele che i suoi torti
A cendicar io vado;
Che sol di stragi e morti
Nunzio vogl'io tornar.

To my beloved, o hasten,
To comfort, to comfort her sad heart.
Sweet are the tears that chasten,
Yet grieve not those who part.
Tell her, to see her righted,
Ne'er will I cease pursuing,
My sword and faith I've plighted.
Nought my resolve shall thwart.

A more violent translation:

Meanwhile, my treasure
go and console,
and from her lovely eyes
try to dry the tears.
Tell her that her wrongs
I am going to avenge,
that I shall not return
except with tidings of death.

Try this. It's probably the most beautiful aria I ever heard. Gives me chills every time.

Don Giovanni is fantastic as well, though I had never heard that part of it.
I particularly enjoy this dark scene from Amadeus.

John Vickers absolutely kills it in the opening of Verdi's Otello.

Vesti la giubba from Pagliacci is probably the most famous (as from The Untouchables): LINK

And then there is the flower duet made famous in car commercials from an obscure opera: flower duet

If you want to try opera i would suggest Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Cavalleria rusticana/Pagliacci (two short operas usually performed together).

Remember that the conductor, orchestra, and singers matter. Not every performance is good. The best versions tend to be from the 60's or before. Great music to put on and kick back on the patio with a scotch or glass of red wine.

This blows me away. Unreal. I’d never shut up if I could sing like Dmitri. Then he died

Ride of the Valkyries from Wagner's Ring Cucle

I am not a big opera buff but this gets my blood stirring every time.

Elmer Fudd's rendition is a close second
