Bump for updates by the "beginners". How are y'all coming along?
I had a few week hiatus. I have two big trade shows that I had to prepare for and I was busy working 16 hours per day. Finally over that madness and getting back to playing some every night. Went and did a lesson tonight and we are still working with a few different songs for a few different reasons
Hallelujah - Learning this song for string picking. Im mostly struggling with flow here and keeping time. Im actually getting the hang of alternate picking.
Hotel California - Using this song to help me get my timing and strumming patterns. Since I know the song, It helps to keep me comfortable.
Wish You Were Here -We are learning song because I like the shite out of it.
Since I really didnt play any or much over the last month, Im just getting back into things. Fortunately for me, my schedule should open up a lot after this month and I will have tons of time to pick around.

I think it's fine to every once in a while go a few days without a formal practice or lesson. We all burn out and this avoids that.
String picking? What do you mean by that? To me all picking with a guitar is string picking. Do you mean that you are focusing on individual strings and learning how to pick/play the correct one? If so, great.
work gets in the way sometimes. I started taking my guitar with me on out of town trips that I drive to. I figger at the end of the day I'm gonna be a in a hotel room by myself, might as well take advantage of that time and break out the guitar.
Keep it up though. One day you'll have enough time behind you that you impress yourself, even if no one else notices.

I guess you mean alternating bass picking, that's really good to learn.

Im certainly not wanting a break. Im jonesing to play. I am just sooooo busy with work right now and have been on the road a few weeks with it. With my small business, I do about 70% of my years sales in the first 4 months of the year. Then it levels out. I am almost there.

That is correct. Picking individual strings vs strumming. Sorry for the lack of vocabulary.

Picking individual strings vs strumming. Again, sorry for the lack of vocab. LOL.
The guy teaching me is very strict on "alternate string picking". And by that, Im talking about pick down on one string then up on the second, down on the next, etc. Not sure the right terminology for that. I was basically picking everything down. He changed that, im getting better at that and it feels comfortable.

Sounds better too huh?

Im just trying to learn the mechanics right now.

I actually did a few things lately based on your guys suggestions. I was using a .46 pick and I moved up to a .74. That has made things a little easier to pick the strings but a little harder to strum. My instructor has to remind me at times that I have too much pick hanging out and that has been a struggle.
We have really been focusing on strum patterns lately. I really think this is going to be a fun thing since I can do a lot of the chords I need for some of the songs that I want to play but Im just swinging it on the strumming based on my ear

That's critical, and it's good you have a proper teacher to show you the right way to do it. As I've said before, I'm entirely self taught and still unwinding bad habits from years of using improper technique.

Not a problem.

Sounds like cross-picking. It does seem more natural to play "up" when moving "up" instead of maintaining the constant up/down alternate picking regardless of direction you're moving across the strings, but you'll get it and the consistency with the pick hand movement will pay off in the long run with speed and tone.

quote:Well that's definitely one type of alternating; however the alternating bass Auggie was probably going for likely centered around hitting the root note, some type strumming, the 5th (note), and some other strum.

It's Alternating Bass because you're not repeatedly hitting the Root-Note over and over... but every other time. It can really sound good since the 5th (note of the scale) happens to be the strongest resolution to the root-note (1st note of scale) and it's already present in the chord so it's not a new addition or sound. It can vary to which string... and only suggesting as to help with vocabulary (not to practice right now)

I am just going to add this tid bit to this beginner thread. It needs to be said
Playing fricking guitar is hard. Learning is hard.
Props to you who can and have taught yourself to do so.
Changing from chord to chord smoothly and efficiently is not easy. Looks easy. Seems easy but man, that is not easy.

Like everything, the more you keep at it, the easier it gets. If you want to do it, You will, but I can tell you, for me, I will always be just a student.
What I m trying to say I guess, I never feel like I'm as good as I want to be. Doesn't matter what other people think, it's a never ending chase. Always the next thing. That's the great thing about it. The more you learn, the more you will want to learn. Spiritual really. A quest.

Bump for updates. How's it going?
Posted on 3/24/20 at 5:03 am to TheCurmudgeon
I've delved deep into my Guitar during this quarantine.
Cleaned and put new strings(overdue)on last night.ESP(?) Light.
I've decided just to keep building on what I've taught myself over 18 years.
But,I'm watching tutorials.Trying new techniques.
Learning new songs.
Building a little every day.
I hope all of y'all are enjoying your guitars as well.

My business has slowed and I have gotten back to putting in some time. My fingers are back to hurting again so that is a good thing I guess.
