I guess I'm "intermediate" whatever that means. Spent more time with a guitar in my hands the last week or two probably than the last year combined. If you told me a month ago that today I could look at a chord chart for a standard bluegrass song, come up with and play a 16 measure break I'd have laughed.

But today I pulled up a chord chart and improved a 16 measure break over the A part. I'm no Tony Rice or Billy Strings, but I'm damn proud of it.

Yep.

That's one thing I get now that I wish I both understood and accepted when starting out. The "good" guys are good because they have thousands of hours behind them. Not tens, not hundreds, but thousands.

Now I know and appreciate that every minute I'm holding my guitar and either playing or working on something new, I'm one minute closer to playing on stage at the Grand Ole Opry. I just hope I don't run out of minutes before that happens.

Fender Play has a three month free offer right now. No credit card required. Just three month access to Fender Play for free. I've looked over some of it, and it's pretty much beginner to intermediate. Lots of stuff on there. Some of the lessons aren't note for note and I haven't come across any transcribed solos. But for beginners, this is a great resource and you can't beat the price right now.

Click the link, get a code and sign up! (they say its for the first 500,000)

I feel like I have been trying to man things that are beyond my skill lately. Practicing too much songs and not enough basics so today, I did just that.

Mostly strumming practice for me today and it was very helpful. I think one of my things I was doing wrong was trying to hit all or most of the string on the upstrums. Today I practiced basic strumming and trying to stay in rhythm. I used my phone to set a pace and just stayed with it.

4 down strum per bar

8 down strums per bar

8 down strums and 8 upstrums per bar

Then I pulled some patterns from my notebook that my teacher had written down.

D, DU, U,D
D, DU, U,DU

And so on. I first did them just with the string muted. Then I tried it playing a chord. Then I played each pattern for 2 bars then changed chords for two bars doing the same patterns.

I need to be doing more of this. I am way more comfortable with strumming even after this simple excersise for an hour or so. Im still not completely comfy with how hard/strong to use the pick but its coming. Its not exactly smooth. LOL

Just find a way to get comfortable with what you need to do, and to get the sound that you want. Your teacher expects you to do it your way, he's just not going to say it. He is there for a little bit of discipline, and to guide you a bit.

Im thinking about buying a small amplifier for my Taylor. Id like to have one to play on sometimes.

Any recommendations? I have a small office that I practice in and I will probably use the amp mostly when Im home alone.

Any recommendations on a beginner amp that is easy to work with for someone who has no experience with them.

Man, you don't need an amp yet, You need to be your own amp. Get confident and play louder. Do what you are doing for now.

Sounds exactly like me lately. This weekend I went back to my one minute chord change exercises and strumming practice. Progress was made. Frustrations killed. Good stuff.

I still don't own a amp, have six guitars, and four can be plugged up.

From my experience, be careful what you ask, when electrifying my first I hastily exited the guitar store all ashamed. There was all manner of noises I had never heard and they weren't suppose to be there.

Someone on here recommended that video way back when I first started looking for a guitar. I watched it a few times.

I have always loved him music and its amazing how simple he makes things look.

I've got an Amp to mic my acoustic and me.

I don't really need it.

I usually play for 10 or less.

I mess around with it.

My Guitar Mentor gave it to me.

Maybe one day I'll need it.

Yup. Especially when playing with high gain, you've got to be able to mute with both hands. I've gotten much better about playing without extraneous noise, but it's still something I work on to this day.

Right and left hand muting are just as important as playing the right notes, especially when amplified.

If you're reasonably confident that you'll be keeping your source of income, there are currently, and will be even more, good buying opportunities in the midst of all this. People will be panic selling gear, and less buyers to compete with.

I have started thinning down my collection, looks like I picked a very bad time to do it. I took several guitars over to a friend's store, for him to sell for me last week. Then Friday The town where his shop is, sent out shutdown orders for non -essential businesses
