Didn't realize this, but Nirvana has admitted that "Smells Like Teen Spirit" guitar riff was directly inspired from Boston's "More Than a Feeling".

Here are the two songs. Listen closely:

Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit

Boston - More than a Feeling

More than a Feeling was a monster guitar song for the time.

I have a buddy who has been a pro guitar player for over 40 years. He says he can recall hearing it the first time - he pulled his car over to the side of the road to listen to it.

Def Leppard was heavily influenced by it (and I'm sure they weren't alone) - they, along with Mutt Lange used Rockman equipment to replicate the "Tom Scholz" sound for Pyromania and Hysteria.

So, yeah - no question.

Wow, next thing you're going to tell me is the Rape Me riff is Smells Like Teen Spirit backwards.

Is Boston or at least Tom Scholz in the Rock-n-roll Hall of Fame?

No. The Irrelevant Hall of Fame remains irrelevant.

(ETA: The Hall snobs blame Boston for corporate rock.)

And Killing Joke's "80's" is "Come as You Are."

Nirvana copied just about everyone and they have no problem admitting it.

Cobain said they wanted to an anti-More Than A Feeling type song, starting the the opening riff.

Wrong, they actually admitted to ripping off the Damned here. Killing joke was just butthurt.

I suppose it's all judgemental and subjective

I hear both. I honestly do, but Killing Joke's is much more dirty just as Nirvana's was. But maybe the Joke copied the Damned.

I'd say more so with the damned, the drumming is even a little consistent with that. Surprised they weren't sued back in 1991-1994.

Not all rip-offs are so obvious, I guess. Johnny Marr said that "Reel Around the Fountain" was James Taylor's "Handyman" and "Bigmouth Strikes Again" was "Jumpin' Jack Flash." Some are more obvious than others, I guess.

Of course not! They had to make room for bands like ABBA.
