Badass album cover.
Kind of want...I'm not really into them any more, but I thought Blackwater Park, Damnation, and Ghost Reveries were great.
I'll give it a shot.

I'm going to see them in Dallas on October 16 before driving down to Houston see Meshuggah and High on Fire.
I'm not sure my body will be able to handle it.

Peacock death metal!

I have never really heard much from Opeth but am thinking about going to the Dallas show because The Sword is opening & I am a huge fan of them. If I am starting out with Opeth, what albums should I start with?

They've changed quite a bit over time, transitioning from death metal to 70s prog rock. Blackwater Park I think is their most popular but I prefer Still Life. Damnation is really good too but its all soft stuff. Their last few albums have been really proggy.

Do you like death metal vocals? If so, I would start with Ghost Reveries, if not I would start with Watershed. Still Life is my favorite.

Their debut, Orchid.
With any sort of band that has undergone such a discernible and significant evolution in sound, the only rational starting point is the beginning.
However, Morningrise to Ghost Reveries , albums two through eight, are beautiful displays of muscianship and progressive heavy music.

Mike has jokes. Did you hear their new lead singer D. Oberman in the video?

Best single since the Watershed album. Quite a sludgy riff for Opeth. Glad to hear that some heaviness has returned.

I'm clearly missing something here as it seems evident based off of Facebook and YouTube comments that most people love this track.
However, without the context of the actual album, it seems pretty unimpressive as a single.
The mix is a bit weak and Mikael's vocals have too many effects for my liking. If you're going to utilize "clean vocals" in favor of screams and guttural growls from previous releases, then dammit make sure the vocals aren't muddled and distorted. It's almost the exact same shite that Joe Duplantier did on Magma (albeit not to the extent that the Frenchman did).
Some people are claiming how heavy this track sounds, and I just don't see it. That lone opening riff after the jazz fusion intro doesn't automatically make the song heavy, in my opinion.
Hopefully, the rest of the album will have more to offer. I like some of their prog rock influences adopted over the last few albums, but there is a fine line between maintaining a balance of heaviness and jaziness or progressive elements (e.g. Pestilence, Cynic, and Atheist).

The jazzy part at the beginning was my favorite part of the song. I honestly hope the rest of the album sounds like that, just less organ. It sounds too derivative of Deep Purple with all their heavy organ use to me.

So, it has leaked. I'm digging it so far. Highlights for me so far are Chrysalis and Strange Brew.
