how many veterans of that scene are as good as Isbell?

I love DBT but even when he was what 20 writing songs with them he was standing out as the strongest songwriter in the group.
IMO.

In fairness, if Jason Isbell could have done this he'd still be universally loved on here and these threads wouldn't devolve into bickering.

I do think it's fair to say Isbell is a particularly strong songwriting talent, and the tortured songwriter tends to get that type of national media attention.

But I definitely think him making a recent career of trashing his own on the basis of ideology contributed to him being beloved by the NYT crowd.

I listened to it this morning. It is a pretty sterile sounding album from an arrangement standpoint. He could have used some mandolin and fiddle to fill out the sound. It’s just him and an a guitar for the most part. It was probably his intention to make a stripped down album but he went a step too far for me. It takes a person with a very good voice to pull that off and he just doesn’t have that.

I think that's about where I am landing.

It's good but not among his best.

Some good songs on it, though - "Gravelweed", "Foxes in the Snow", "Crimson and Clay", and "True Believer" are all good songs and would've been really good on prior albums as a mix up.

"Open and Close" is a really good bordering great song.

Could have definitely mixed up some of the instrumentals - it sounds kind of monotonous at times.

I might need to listen more. I thought Weathervanes was just decent to pretty good on the first few listens, but I now think it's among his best.

The other thing that is driving me crazy is that his enunciation has clearly changed with those headlight veneers he's now sporting.

He just wanted to make an acoustic album on his own. He’s not making the music for you. He’s making the music for him. If you connect to it, that’s great. If you don’t, then it’s whatever.

Jason isbell has an amazing voice. Not sure I trust your opinion when it comes to actual talent.

Funny, I caught a little of his tooth-whistle on a listen this morning and thought: I wonder if he took off those stupid teeth after the divorce.

Finally got a listen. Not my cup of tea. Open and Close and Crimson and Clay are the best songs on the album to me. Like others have said he sounds like a 90 year old with dentures in. He really needs to get that fixed.

Agree but I think Gravelweed is the best song on the record and up there with his best.

listened to it twice now, it's a stripped down break up album. Great song writing but I would prefer the full sound of the 400 unit on this album.

You may not like him but this is objectively just not true. He released some decent albums with a few great songs shortly after the split and then became king of Americana with Southeastern and Something More Than Free. He’s won 6 Grammy awards.

Yes he’s a pompous douche. Maybe getting away from shires will soften that a bit.

brother, that was almost 20 years ago and he's produced a ton of great music after he was kicked out

is he a leftist douche bag? yes
is he a great songwriter? also yes

it is clear that he is "all in" on his career. A big part of this is appealing to the music press and awards and artist communities...no better way to endear yourself to that crowd than to play at the DNC and be a preachy leftist. It may or may not be who he really is, but I can absolutely see him playing it up to further his career and fight to stay relevant. (See Bruce Springsteen for the worst offender)

I think it is a pretty damn good album and the solo acoustic sound works well with the songs. It’s a nice showcase of his guitar paying, which is often lost with the 400 unit. The title track, Crimson and Clay, Gravelweed are all great, among others.

I think many of the songs will translate well to full band treatment when plays them live.
