re: Music Board Battle: Depeche Mode or The Cure? Which Band is Better?

I've seen Depeche many, many times and always enjoy their shows. But I have yet to see The Cure live. I know the shows on their own tour and not festival type shows go on for hours and they play more obscure album tracks...NOTHING LIKE DEPECHE MODE in that regard.

Love song.
However, if you were to ask me to choose between Love Song and Everything Counts or It's No Good...I'd choose the latter two.

Fascination street is another good one.

shite, I think Depeche Mode is winning! Unexpected.

The fact that Depeche Mode is getting this much support over the band they ripped off, only with electronic dance beats layered on top, makes me truly understand why so much new music sucks. Man, I hate Depeche Mode. The epitome of wimpy arse European techno pop.
The Cure took dumps better than Depeche Mode.
What's odd about the Cure is that for a band with such a rep for being depressing, their best songs are all super upbeat, like Love Cats or Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me.

I haven't really put that much thought into it. I like both bands. Don't know a lot of either material. I prefer Depeche Mode.

Yes, I'm serious.
I think Depeche Mode is pretty mediocre, and I wasn't even aware that was a minority opinion until this thread. They always struck me as the middle ground between the Cure and Duran Duran, only not nearly as good as either.
But having grown up in the 80s, I intensely dislike European "new wave". Those bands are what drove me into punk. So, without them, I never discover the Minutemen, so thanks for that, DM. The Cure are clearly post-punk, but you can see how they built off the Buzzcocks and the like, which is pretty cool. They really did "tear it down and build it again."

That Depeche Mode band is the greatest thing ever! Because of that cover band....Depeche Mode for the win! Landslide.

If all you ever heard of Depeche is their first couple of albums I would almost agree. But even "Photographic" (The Some Bizarre Version not the Speak and Spell album version) is very brooding and dark.
Once they hit the Black Celebration era they had shrugged off the teeny bop label and hit stride with a fantastic run of albums/singles all the way through ULTRA. And it certainly does NOT sound like wimpy Euro techno pop to me

The Cure never wrote anything as badass as I Feel You.

That is a raw sexy song right there ;)
I love The Cure, but was always more drawn to Depeche Mode because of the electronic sounds and vintage keys.
For me it was:
Black Celebration
Music For The Masses
Violator
Songs of Faith and Devotion
