Im in my mid 20s just for reference. I'm still upset with myself that I didnt get to see Levon perform before he passed. RIP

Wow. And as the father of a young man in his mid-20s, I would just like to say - much of the music produced since you've been alive has been a complete waste of time.

The best "young" bands are RHCP, Soundgarden and Tool - they're all my age or older.

Wow, I'm a little older (but maybe younger than you) and I absolutely hate the first band and will just say the other two arent my cup of tea...

With members in their 50's?

Those are not young bands...

I love The Band - Dixie and The Weight are 2 of my favorite songs, particularly the versions from The Last Waltz, but I'm failing to see how they were underrated.

The Band got some love, mainly for the hits like "The Weight" ,"The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" etc, but I don't think many people realize how good ALL of their music is. I guess it just depends on you view the word underrated.

that's funny, last night, when I looked at this thread I thought of the exact two same groups. Not so much because of their musical prowess, but rather
they get tons of radio airplay-everybody and their grandma knows a slew of their songs, yet nobody knows who the hell they are

Maybe not "of all time" but I think zz top is underated. Gibbons is a hell of guitarist. They have some great tunes but I've never heard anyone talking up their talent.

ZZ Top was a great band whose late years almost make Aerosmith´s look absolutely laden with integrity.

The Bad Company comment is pretty valid.

Perhaps. But they still have some songs that jam. Imo, much lesser bands get more attention.

big star are clearly one of the best answers. #1 record is one of my favorite albums of all time, and kind of the definition of being underrated considering it was basically never played to much of an audience, even though the band put out a couple more albums. big star are very underrated, but given their attention in recent years, I have to think of some others to say that are still virtually unheard of outside of music snob world.

Game Theory and Television Personalities come to mind. As for modern music I'd probably say Wingnut Dishwashers Union, Beulah, or maybe Swearin' (even though they only released their first album last year, doubt they'll get big though).
