Like him or not (I'm personally not a fan of his music but I'll give credit where it's due) this song was cool HOWEVER the video that he and John Landis made launched this song and album. The special effects from Rick Baker were awesome and made this a mini movie, especially as a lot of the visual and sound effects can be traced to An American Werewolf in London. Add in the voice over from Vincent Price. It is a fantastic video.

Every time a Michael Jackson song comes up in my Spotify playlist I can't turn it off.

There are so many artists who are garbage people that I just go with the music and not the person.

Thriller was an awesome video too.

It didn't launch the song and album. Thriller was already the biggest album on the planet by the time that this video was made. Billie Jean and Beat It were massive hits that were constantly played on Mtv. Thriller was just the next song up.

Not trying to take anything away from the video. But anyone that was alive at the time knows that this album was already the most popular album on the planet when the video came out.

Turning "Thriller" into a mini-movie was still a brilliant marketing idea though.

Yeah. It was definitely groundbreaking, in that regard. It seems like Mtv had just started doing "World Premier" videos right before the Thriller video.

Pretty much every kid would try to make sure that they were near a tv when Mtv was supposed to play it.

MTV was huge when Thriller was released on video. The video was a pioneer in combining a song and making a mini movie out of it. After that, numerous artists started doing the same (Huey Lewis' "Stuck with You" first comes to mind).
Of course, none were as good as 'Thriller' so MTV started editing the video leading directly to the music part.

We were pretty lucky to be there for the launch of MTV and the awesome music of the 70s and 80s.

And yes, I think Beat It and Billie Jean were huge hits before the Thriller video was released, and I do remember the video's world premiere was must-see tv. It was just a fantastic album without a bad song on it. We wore out that cassette.

Billie Jean was the first release, thriller was 3rd iirc. Billie Jean was groundbreaking as well with the light up steps.

As a 14 year old that album had zero holes.

It had been awhile since Off The Wall, so it was almost like Billie Jean caught a lot of people by surprise.

There was a lot of buzz about Beat It before it was even getting Mtv/radio play because of the Eddie Van Halen solo. Then the video came out and it was even considered groundbreaking at the time. Everybody had to have that ugly red jacket.

Then Thriller came out and everybody wanted that ugly red jacket. It was a great time to be alive. Even the Pepsi commercial was a huge deal...before his hair caught on fire.

Watch “Billie Jean” at the Motown 25th anniversary show. He went from a star to a superstar. It’s magical if you are old enough to remember it. Even if you aren’t it was still a great performance.
