Even better than High Top Mountain. I was about halfway through The Promise before I realized it was an 80s cover. Great stuff.

I'm bumping an old thread because I just ran across this album on Spotify. Amazing. Reminds me of what country sounded like when I was a kid.

It's a great album. Rolling Stone, however, only gave it 3 stars so not everyone agrees with the "rebirth of Country Christ" coinage....which he's not. But it is nice to see an album and artist pay homage to the roots. Music and musicians are punished for not constantly evolving so very unlikely to have the Merle type country still alive today.

I just looked up the Rolling Stone review.....what a half assed piece of garbage review that was. 3.5 stars is fair, but only 2 sentences about the actual music you are reviewing?
I don't disagree with what he said, but I question whether or not he actually listened because of what he chose to comment on...I mean really, that's the lyric from Turtles he chose to write about?!?!

Ive listened to it recently and again this morning and i get why there is hype around this guy... For the most part its harkening back to the outlaw country days, though this one is a little less so than his first record...
Kinda reminds me of when a band like the derailers came on the scene or the star room boys... though the sound was different than simpsons, it was old school and little to no "alt" to the country...
It's a fun, refreshing listen, but I'd be curious if the songs had staying power once the shine wears off..
The promise is probably the last song Id imagine as a country song, but he owns it!

Living the Dream is great, this album is solid. If you get a chance, watch the YouTube video for Sometimes wine by Sunday Valley.
