How she swore that it never would end, I remember how she held me so tight......Wish I didn't know now, what I didn't know then. -Bob Segar Against the wind

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
Fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your hometown
Searching for someone or something to show you the way
Tired of lying in the sunshine, stay at home to watch the rain
And you are young, and life is long, and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run
You missed the starting gun
So you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same, in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath, and one day closer to death
Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught, or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over
Thought I'd something more to say
Fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your hometown
Searching for someone or something to show you the way
Tired of lying in the sunshine, stay at home to watch the rain

Pancho and Lefty. Awesome.
I like this one too:
"Nutshell"
We chase misprinted lies
We face the path of time
And yet I fight
And yet I fight
This battle all alone
No one to cry to
No place to call home
Oooh...Oooh...
Oooh...Oooh...
My gift of self is raped
My privacy is raked
And yet I find
And yet I find
Repeating in my head
If I can't be my own
I'd feel better dead
Oooh...Oooh...
Oooh...Oooh...

You told me once that you were mine alone forever
And I was yours 'till the end of eternity
But all those vows are broken now
And I will never be the same except in memory
Remember me when the candle lights're gleaming
Remember me at the close of a long, long day
And it would be so sweet when all alone I'm dreamin'
Just to know you still remember me
A brighter face may take my place when we're apart dear
Another love with a heart more bold and free
But in the end fair weather friends may break your heart, dear
If they do, sweetheart, remember me
Remember me when the candle lights're gleaming
Remember me at the close of a long, long day
And it would be so sweet when all alone I'm dreamin'
Just to know you still remember me
Just to know you still remember me

I'm an old man now, I can't do nothing
Young folks don't pay me no mind
But in my day, I sure was something
Before I felt the heavy hand of time
I'm an old man now, I'm bound for glory
Time to lay these burdens down
Had enough of this old world of worry
Gonna trade my troubles for a crown
I will make my way across the fields of cotton
And wade through muddy waters one last time
And in my dreams I come out clean
When I reach the other side
Waste away the sunsets
Where rainbows never die
I've got on last thing to do
One more mile before I'm through
Casting off these earthly chains
Going where there's no more pain
I will make my way across the fields of cotton
And wade through muddy waters one last time
And in my dreams I come out clean
When I reach the other side
Waste away the sunsets
Where rainbows never die
I'm an old man now, can't do nothing

It’s time for us to settle up and go our separate ways,
No one takes the blame, but we both have to pay
Everything that once was ours, now is yours or mine
I guess we finally made it, across the great divide
And it sure hurts like hell, to see you walk away
And there’s nothing I can do to make you want to stay
No one but you and I can know how hard we tried
There’s no turning back, we’ve crossed the great divide
Now we’re standing in the doorway, of a house we made a home
And it seems so cold and empty, now that all our love is gone
We’ll take one last look together, before we say goodbye
Since we finally made it, across the great divide
And it sure hurts like hell, to see you walk away
And there’s nothing I can do, to make you want to stay
No one but you and I, can know how hard we tried
But there’s no turning back, we’ve crossed the great divide
There’s just no turning back, we’ve crossed the great divide

There are a couple contenders on Isbell’s Southeastern. I
This song by Isbell always gets to me. It's about impending death, how someday one of them will have to go on alone. But not if they are vampires and immortal...
If We Were Vampires
It's not the long flowing dress that you're in
Or the light coming off of your skin
The fragile heart you protected for so long
Or the mercy in your sense of right and wrong
It's not your hands, searching slow in the dark
Or your nails leaving love's watermark
It's not the way you talk me off the roof
Your questions like directions to the truth
It's knowing that this can't go on forever
Likely, one of us will have to spend some days alone
Maybe we'll get 40 years together
But one day, I'll be gone or one day, you'll be gone
If we were vampires and death was a joke
We'd go out on the sidewalk and smoke
And laugh at all the lovers and their plans
I wouldn't feel the need to hold your hand
Maybe time running out is a gift
I'll work hard 'til the end of my shift
And give you every second I can find
And hope it isn't me who's left behind
It's knowing that this can't go on forever
Likely one of us will have to spend some days alone
Maybe we'll get 40 years together
One day, I'll be gone, one day you'll be gone
It's knowing that this can't go on forever
Likely one of us will have to spend some days alone
Maybe we'll get 40 years together
One day I'll be gone, one day you'll be gone
