quote:

She was just 17 and you know what I mean.

If we're going this direction, Gary Puckett's Young Girl is the definition.

Young girl
Get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run, girl
You're much too young, girl
With all the charms of a woman
You've kept the secret of your youth
You led me to believe you're old enough
To give me love

And now it hurts to know the truth
Woah, oh, oh
Young girl
Get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
You'd better run, girl
You're much too young, girl
Beneath your perfume and make-up
You're just a baby in disguise
And though you know
That it's wrong to be
Alone with me
That 'come on' look is in your eyes

Woah, oh, oh
Young girl
Get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run, girl
You're much too young, girl
So hurry home to your mama
I'm sure she wonders where you are
Get out of here
Before I have the time
To change my mind
'Cause I'm afraid we'll go too far

Woah, oh, oh
Young girl
Get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
You'd better run, girl
You're much too young, girl
Young girl
Get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
You'd better run, girl
You're much too young, girl
Young girl
Get out of my mind

I can't remember if it's BIG or Outkast but there's one lyric that says "the money I make be putting cable off in every room".

I guess it's not so dated that it's totally obsolete at this point but still makes me chuckle. The fact that at the time it was such a flex to be able to afford not just having cable, but having it in every room.

Scott McKenzie: San Francisco:

If you're going to San Francisco
Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair
If you're going to San Francisco
You're gonna meet some gentle people there

[Verse 2]
For those who come to San Francisco
Summertime will be a love-in there
In the streets of San Francisco
Gentle people with flowers in their hair

[Bridge]
All across the nation such a strange vibration
People in motion
There's a whole generation with a new explanation
People in motion, people in motion

[Verse 3]
For those who come to San Francisco
Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair
If you come to San Francisco
Summertime will be a love-in there

[Outro]
If you come to San Francisco
Summertime will be a love-in there

Frank Zappa was making fun of the whole "Go to San Francisco" thing at the time in 1968

quote:

I will ask the Chamber Of Commerce
How to get to Haight Street
And smoke an awful lot of dope
I will wander around barefoot
You know I have a psychedelic gleam in my eye at all times
I will love everyone
I will love the police as they kick the shite out of me on the street
I will sleep
Yes, I will go to a house
That's, that's what I will do I will go to a house
Where there's a rock roll band
Because the groups all live together
I will stay with a rock & roll band
I will be their road manager And I will stay there with them
And I will get the crabs

Jimmy Soul's "If You Want to be Happy" would never fly today, but it's pretty hilarious.

Maybe not dated, per se, but I feel that Whole Lotta Love (Zeppelin) would require a "Whole Lotta Consent Forms" today.

You need cooling
Baby, I'm not fooling
I'm gonna send you back to schooling
Way down inside
Honey, you need it
I'm gonna give you my love
I'm gonna give you my love, oh

(And, with the "schooling" comment, while it is not explicitly illegal, certainly under age issues could be inferred.)

Verse 2 doesn't add much.

But, Verse 3:

You've been cooling
Baby, I've been drooling
All the good times, baby
I've been misusing
Way, way down inside
I'm gonna give you my love
I'm gonna give you every inch of my love
I'm gonna give you my love
Yeah, alright, let's go

Less and less ambiguous. And quite aggressive.

Finally, part of the outro:

Shake for me, girl
I wanna be your backdoor man

To reiterate, modern times would require "Whole Lotta Consent Forms".

Well, if you throw out obvious relics like:
Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy
Flat Foot Floogie With A Floy Floy

And questionable-in-any-era like:
Run For Your Life
You're Sixteen

there's always...
Operator [you can keep the dime]
I Can't Drive 55
I Dig Rock And Roll Music
Feelin' Groovy
Fixin' To Die Rag
Volcano

Whole lotta the Stones don't sing this one anymore

quote:

Gold coast slave ship bound for cotton fields
Sold in the market down in New Orleans
Scarred old slaver knows he's doing alright
Hear him whip the women just around midnight

[Chorus]
Brown sugar, how come you taste so good? Uh huh
Brown sugar, just like a young girl should, uh huh, oh (Woo)

[Verse 2]
Drums beating, cold English blood runs hot
Lady of the house wonderin' when it's gonna stop
House boy knows that he's doing alright
You shoulda heard 'em just around midnight

[Chorus]
Brown sugar, how come you taste so good now?
Brown sugar, just like a young girl should now (Yeah)

[Chorus]
Ah, get on, brown sugar, how come you taste so good?
Ah, got me craving the, the brown sugar
Just like a black girl should, yeah

[Verse 3]
Ah, and I bet your mama was a tent show queen
And all her boyfriends were sweet sixteen
I'm no schoolboy, but I know what I like
You shoulda heard me just around midnight

Into the Night by Benny Mardones

She's just 16 years old
Leave her alone, they said
Separated by fools
Who don't know what love is yet
But I want you to know

If I could fly
I'd pick you up
I'd take you into the night
And show you a love
Like you've never seen, ever seen

A few posts like this have downvotes. I sort of wish the downvoters would actually respond, bc I don't understand the downvotes.

There are a few of songs like this (I posted Young Girl) that are extremely dated in lyrical/topical content, and there's zero chance someone puts this out in 2024. I'd be interested to see the rationale for down voting since this seems like 100% on point for this topic to me.

Kind of funny, because I love lyrics and had never really paid attention to the lyrics of "Brown Sugar". When I finally did, it was right before we saw TRS live. Then an article came out, decrying the lyrics, and the song was removed from the setlist. My husband blames me

Your "Young Girl" submission has me thinking just how many songs have older men singing about teen girls. It's A LOT.

"Sweet 16"
"Don't Stand So Close To Me"
"I Couldn't Dance With Another" (Well she was just 17, and you know what I mean)

The list is endless. Here is to youth and beauty. May we always celebrate it in song!
