I’m sitting here thinking about the pre ‘77 guitarists in Skynyrd and WOW what a talented group!! That leads to my question....who was the most talented? I’m not an educated guitarist, so I’m looking for input from you guys who are. They all bring something different to the table in my eyes, however....Can you rank them, talent wise? Then list your favorite?
Here they are in no certain order:
Allen Collins
Stevie Gaines
Ed King
Gary Rossington
Like I said, I’m not educated enough to rank them, but today my favorite is Gary. I like his laid back picking and slide.

King or Gaines.
Gaines was such a breath of fresh air in regards to his solo style. While many may not believe it to be much different than Collins or Rossington, I found that Gaines played more intricate type stuff and understood how to build a solo.

I find it interesting that Ed King was from California and already had some success as a member of Strawberry Alarm Clock and their song “Insense Peppermint “ sort of LA pop rock of that time period, then finds himself a member of a band that was considered the epitome of “Southern” rock. It is like he lived in two different universes.

Here's an interview Marty Schwartz did with Ed King from a couple of years ago. Don't know if this was posted before. Ed shows the correct way to play Sweet Home Alabama.

According to an interview Ed did, SAC had fired their manager and disbanded. Not long after they learned that their former manager had hired a bunch of guys and booked a tour throughout the south billing the imposters as SAC. They filed an injunction to prevent them from touring and instead did the tour themselves. That is how Ed’s path crossed with RVS. Skynyrd was the opening band on that tour.

Collins and Gaines for me

Most talented by a good bit. His life was cut way too short.
Allen Collins
Gary Rossington
Ed King
Ask me tomorrow and I'll give them in another order. They were all good and had their high points. When Stevie Gaines joined, he made Collins and Rossington step up their game.

King formerly of the Strawberry Alarm Clock wrote Sweet Home Alabama

Ed co-wrote the song....his claim to fame (not a negative) on this song was the iconic opening riffs that Ed said "Gary was playing some new stuff and I just picked up my Strat and started bouncing something off of what he was playing (paraphrase)." The rest is history

Gaines was a special special player
King
Collins and Rossington are interchangeable imo.

He would be my choice- was already legendary from his work with Strawberry Alarm Clock...

I think Gaines was the most talented but the credit with the most hook riffs on some of their most popular songs go to King.
Am I Losing guitar solo is one of my all time favorites.
I would say King with Gaines a close second if only he could have gone on longer. Like someone said Rossinton and Collins interchangeable....respectively.
