Hank Williams recorded several songs under the pseudonym, "Luke the Drifter". Most of these songs involved spoken words and some sermonizing - which Williams thought his jukebox playing fans would not like. The identity of Luke the Drifter was one of the worst kept secrets in entertainment - these songs were mostly well received.

Back in my fraternity days (when dinosaurs roamed the earth), this was a popular album among the brothers.

I've mentioned this in several country threads. The one I have owned for the past 25 years is this one:

The 2 songs you linked are truly great. The actual song Beyond the Sunset is achingly beautiful.

It's a pity this stuff is so obscure.

I think I nominated this one for most depressing song in that thread several months back.

I own that CD, and all of Hank Williams stuff. Gotta have him, Bob Wills, Jimmie Rodgers and The Carter Family and I do.

Love most music but it is hard to beat that gang I just mentioned.

Hank's Ramblin' Man, wow!

But the greatest one of all was called Luke the Drifter
He wore diamond rings and his tailor made cowboy suits
Lawdy he was a honky tonk ramblin' man
He had this whole world in the palm of his hand

Till he died at twenty nine from the lovesick blues
Like young Billy the Kid and ole Jessie he had nothin' to lose

Is that who George Jones was referring to with:
quote:

You know the heart of country music
Still beats in Luke the Drifter
You can tell it when he sang I Saw the Light
Old Marty, Hank and Lefty
Why I can feel 'em right here with me
On this Silver Eagle rolling through the night?

Yes. Although "I Saw the Light" was released as a Hank Williams record, not under the Luke the Drifter alias.
