Living Colour's 'Vivid' at 30
I loved this album from the day it came out. I was a huge Rush fan even back then and this was the first album that came out and the music just really connected like it did with Rush. I still listen to at least one Living Colour song every day. When I saw this quote from Vernon Reid I had a 'ah oh ok' moment:

Vernon: At the time we were recording Vivid, I was listening to a lot of Zeppelin and also a lot of Rush. When you listen to "Desperate People," the rhythm of the bridge is a tribute to Rush, actually. If you go back and listen to "Tom Sawyer," that's where we got the vibe for that bridge. We came up at a time when bands aimed for songs that were iconic, and that's what we were gunning for with both "Cult" and "Desperate People." And I feel that helped us reach a wider audience, especially once we hit MTV.

I think it's cool Jagger played on and produced some of the tracks

I loved this album and time’s up. When I was in HS pre-grunge these guys set the standard. Everyone in this band is top shelf talent wise.
It sucks they had to struggle so hard to get signed. The poisons and warrants of the world at that time were what label guys were looking for. Right band, wrong time.

Still one of my favorites. I was in college when they were at the height of their popularity. Vernon Reid's chord voicings and Santana-esque tremolo picking was a huge influence on my guitar playing at the time. I played in a rather large jazz group back then, we played Jazzfest in '90. Saw them play in Tuscaloosa around that time, got to talk to those guys, it was kinda surreal.

I remember Living Colour when they played a free show at Auburn, right before Vivid broke out. They opened for the Sugarcubes and The Godfathers. Living Colour killed it so hard, nearly everyone lost interest in the other bands, and the Sugarcubes were playing to crickets by the end of their set, lol...
MTV was there to film the shows (I remember seeing the "Cult Of Personality" live version aired occasionally), but given what happened that night, I imagine they scrapped the idea of airing any performances from the other bands
