Let's Talk About Warren Zevon

In some ways, I consider him to be one of our most underappreciated songwriters. I first got interested in him with his 1976 self-titled album. Great tunes: Frank and Jesse James, Hasten Down the Wind, Desparados Under the Eaves . . . actually every track on the album.
No doubt "Excitable Boy" was his breakthrough album, although it cursed him with "Werewolves of London". Not really as bad as being cursed with, say, "Margaritaville", but I'm sure it became a pain in the arse after awhile.
Even his weakest albums had at least a couple of solid tracks.
I saw him live twice (once before he got sober and once after), and he was a very good live performer.

That 1976 album is his masterpiece -- really the masterpiece of that whole "El Lay" school of the '70s, which I never cared for.

I agree. Probably the most intresting album of that whole period. Of course, that's when I first started hanging out in L.A., hence my love of the track "Join Me in L.A.". I know . . . embarrassing, but I was pretty young.

I love Zevon. Have Excitable Boy on vinyl, and that's a damn fun record to put on while cleaning up the house on a sunny saturday morning. Mutineer is haunting and beautiful, and the live Poor Poor Pitiful Me, from the live acoustic album, Learning To Flinch, is 9 minutes of beautiful guitar work (can't find it online, but it's on spotify). Worrier King, on the same album is great as well. Hasten Down The Wind is fantastic, and of course, one of his last songs before he died, Keep Me In Your Heart For Awhile.
Lastly, for some fun, Hit Somebody (The Hockey Song) is one of my favorites. A classic story told through the allegory of hockey. Also, see if you can recognize the voice who says Hit Somebody in the chorus,

Zevon was good stuff. I was also a huge fan of Elvis Costello back then. I don't think there is a song on "My Aim is True" that I don't like.

Absolutely. After that he was somewhat uneven though there were always enough good tracks to make his albums worthwhile. I used to listen to his stuff almost non-stop. No telling what his career could have been if the vodka hadn't gotten to him early. I was lucky enough to see him at the Varsity twice in the 90's doing an essentially unplugged solo show. It was easy to get down in front of the stage for a very close, unobstructed view.

At the end of his first Varsity show he was asking for encore requests. Bill Lee was mine. He just looked at me and said "sorry man, I can't do that with this equipment.". A shame, I've always appreciated Bill Lee.

The appearance on Letterman shortly before he died, was just so damn poignant. I'll never forget his statement on his impending demise: "Enjoy every sandwich." Lawyers, Guns and Money is a classic.
