One thing I learned live and in person is that you can't go to a Counting Crows show thinking you're going to sing along to your favorite songs. LINK

I have a lot of respect for the guy as an artist, and I can understand the instinct to give a different interpretation of a song every time you sing it.

But come on. Can this type of performance be taken seriously? I mean, it's not bad. Right?

eta, I guess it's pretty bad in some serious ways. But then again it's not bad.

I totally understand that concept. But this dude is CARRYING ON.

I mean, he's so serious that it becomes a joke that is so funny that it's serious again.

You're talking songwriter, right? Because I agree.

Great singer, great songwriter. Great poonhound. Pretty good interview on Howard Stern, too, fwiw.

I admire the guy a lot. I guess some of the live performance is just over my head.

Yea I'm talking songwriter.

He treats his live shows like their theater just as much as a musical performance. I respect and enjoy that but I understand how I could be off putting

Great songwriter. Although, not very prolific.

The live histrionics are a little over the top.

no doubt

i've seen the band live a couple of times and he's always been interesing.

if not for him i'd never have met courteney cox at the saenger theater in 2002, flirted like an arse and pissed my wife off.

Lyrically I really like duritz. Never seen them live but I feel he may go overboard on some parts. The counting crows are a fantastic studio band, love their sound.

Crows are great live too. Probably one of the best live bands that was popular among the Top 40 and "real music" crowds.

His tortured semi-emo schtick can be tolerated because of the chicks he bangs.

As for performance, he f---ed with the crowd at a concert here a few years back by asking them what they wanted him to play, saying no, and basically walking off before playing some of the requested hits. My buddy who went said he was sort of ticked, but respected the move since Duritz was drunk and DNGAF.

I'll have to disagree that they are a good live band.

I've seen them twice and both times it was boring as all get out.

EVERY song was played at a snails pace.

Norah Jones is an upbeat rocker compared to the CC shows I saw.

He was a lot more than drunk for that show.

He's def one of these tortured soul arteest, but a hell of a songwriter. It's now expected of concert goers to know Crows are gonna switch up songs live

I disagree. Live music always sounds better, even if it's done the same way as the original. When you hear it live -- especially at a small venue -- you can feel the music in your chest. Nothing quite like it.
