My 14 yo covets one (Adam Jones of course) and it’s his bday.

Unless I pay $7000 for a Gibson Custom or $17-20k for Jones’ signature, it seems futile.

I did find a used one for $3000, but they explain it as a warhorse and not a case queen, etc. so, it’s beat the frick up.

Epi LPs are long gone.

Who knew this was a thing.....

Yeah. They do.

They’re out........both the 3100 and 3200

I have an Agile and it’s the single best bang for the buck out there. Big fan.

That Gibson LP is a Studio model and has a very different neck profile compared to a LP Standard. The Studio neck doesn't work for me.

Here’s an epi
LINK

Also, a 14 year old doesn’t deserve a guitar anywhere near that nice. Make him learn on a crappy entry level Ibanez or Squire, builds character.

Total waste of $$. Buy him a $1,000.00 PRS, a few lessons with a good teacher, and get him a subscription to Penthouse.

Is it for you or the 14 year old? I have a 15 year old that is pretty good and played for years and still picks guitars based on looks.

I’m not an OT baller, but dropping $20k on a guitar for her isn’t going to happen - and she isn’t far enough along that it would make a difference in her playing or commitment to practicing at this point.

My post seemed to point to me considering high end items for him. nope.

hes an epi/agile level right now. but, what he does is he upgrades the pups to match the sound he's looking for.

this one will have a Seymour SH-6 Distortion put in the bridge. he researched Jones' sound and found info on that. Jones' uses custom wound pups and they aren't too open about the specs.....hence his signature items ($$$$$$$)

he has a Seymour 79 in my Agile and it really pops the EVH sound.

ETA: he's already begun compiling the Adam Jones pedal board items, but that is also a big ticket item that'll take time to complete. hell, the power supply alone is $200.

There’s a lot of cheaper options to make something that sounds pretty close. I use an otraki, and it’s pretty damn awesome for like $35.

Adam Jones’s rig from 2008 consisted of:
DOD FX40B EQ (can get pretty close with a $30 behringer eq like I use)
Boss BF-2 Flanger (can get a behringer for around $50)
Boss DD-3 digital delay (behringer’s knockoff is around $66. I use a behringer vintage analog delay which literally cost me $20)
Dunlop crybaby BB-535 (about $125 used)
Ernie Ball Volume Pedal (about $60 used)
Mxr m-133 microamp (about $47 used)

So, you can basically have his same board (minus a tuner which you already should have) for under $400. Playing through a decent marshall or mesa boogie amp should be able to get you pretty close. However, what if you ain’t got a good marshall or boogie? You can shell out an additional $150-$200 for a good wampler plexidrive or similar pedal to stick in your chain playing through a clean style amp.

he's got the two bolded. next on the map is the DD and MXR. On the MXR, does that help grab more gain?

that's great to know. the Boss items are pricey!

Vox, Marshall, Orange, and Mesa Boogie are all in the same tonal family. I’m sure if he played around with the settings enough with the board, he’d find something in the ball park. You can never get exact though, because no two amplifiers or pedals, even of the same model/brand are exactly alike.

As long as you’re not farting around on a peavy or fender, you should be able to get close enough. Fenders tend to have a lot more treble, so their drive tones are very distinct from the darker-voiced marshall/mesa/vox/orange amps.

Granted, with the right creativity and mix of pedals, you can make anything sound like anything.

Also, if you think Boss pedals are pricy, you have no idea how pricey pedals can be. Boss is lower/mid tier price wise. They’re like the chevrolet of guitar effects pedals. There’s some cheaper bargain models, but there’s a lot more expensive luxury brands out there.

For example, one pedal that I have been coveting for quite some time is the Empress Heavy Effects pedal which retails over $300. My amp only cost that

Original Klon Centaurs can go for $7k

He's probably still at the phase where he wants everything exactly like his idol. I was that way at his age too.
You won't talk him out of that anytime soon but eventually he'll realize he wants equipment that is well made, versatile, and not "somebody else's" guitar that he can make his own or can make any sound he wants.

If he's insistent on that route, get the Epi posted earlier.

He is.

But, the other day, he belts out a riff from Kansas and followed it with a Black Sabbath tune. Weird but refreshing.....I love Tool as well, but he needs to open up his exposure.

Dear Commie,

Take a look at ESP. I wanted a Gibson ten years ago, decided it wasn't worth dropping 3K plus for (bought a PRS Custom 24 Top Ten instead).

Went to the ESP site, found basically the "Gibson" I wanted with the same features, feel, look, etc, for $600.
