One is the greatest rock n roll band of all time and the other is Journey.

One was a band and the other was a joke named Journey.

I own Zep's entire catalog - on vinyl.
I've never owned a Journey record.

No and hell NO! Schon couldn't hold Page's jock
Not true. Schon was playing with Santana when he was 16. He's one of the most criminally underrated rock guitarist of his time.
After SRV died, PBS did a special with all the great guitar slingers. For the finale they brought out Clapton, Jimmy Vaughn, Bonnie Rait, Schon, BB King and several other heavyweights. They closed with a blues jam and after Clapton had throughly embarrassed most of the pickers on that stage, Schon stepped up absolutely burned it down.
For me it was kinda like the first time I learned that Prince was actually a very talented lead player. Don't believe me ask The Rev. Billy Gibbons. He's still trying to figure out the intro to When Doves Cry.

How did this get past the admins?

Two cheesy, over rated groups that rose to fame in the 70s. One was cheesier for a longer period of time into the 80s and through the present.

Smith is a highly regarded drummer, from a technical and innovative standpoint - perhaps not quite an elite drummer and certainly not a John Bonham (no one was), but definitely no slouch.

I was a drummer in a previous life. I'm always paying attention to the drums.

When you're wrong, you're just wrong. Bonham had a technical mastery that was often hidden in the fact he played so damned hard. Dude was legitimately the best rock drummer (IMHO) until Danny Carey.
And I think a lot of Steve Smith.

You're probably right that he's underrated because he's most closely associated with Journey - the cat did some really creative things with the arrangements, even with Journey.
Why John Bonham was great

Is this a mismatch? Had someone try to compare the two, thought I’d bring the topic to the board.
I can't believe this is even a debate.

smith plays bonham
He does a pretty good job on Good Times, Bad Times - I ain't going to lie.
Of course, I've been complimentary of Smith and the band in the thread - something you might have missed.
He's still no Bonham, though.
The dude was born to play the drums

Best thing about that band was the video game I used to play in my local Piggly Wiggly.
I used to have that game on my Atari 2600 (Journey Escape). Not a bad game.
I fricking hate Journey. Awful, ear scratching music that instantly puts me in a bad mood. I don't care if they were all the greatest musicians to ever play, they sucked as a band. I'm not even a fan of Zep's entire catalog but there's no question that their absolute worst album was better than anything Journey ever released.
