I'm considering picking up the guitar as a new year's resolution. I'd like to devote 2 - 3 hours per week next year to learning how to play. I am an absolute beginner at the guitar. I previously knew how to read music (a long time ago in middle school) and grew up in a musical family, if that helps.

I am looking for online lessons, and Guitar Tricks has a lot of positive reviews. Does anyone have any experience with this program they can share? How viable is it for an absolute beginner looking to learn the basics and eventually get good enough to pick some songs with some friends? Are their any other recommended alternatives?

Thank you

Maybe so. I'm just trying to get the basics down. But 2 - 3 hours per week over the course of a year adds up

I hope you will like it so much, you will want to play that much every day.

That would be nice. Do you have any experience with Guitar Tricks?

They didn't have that kind of thing when I was learning. Nowadays, I just write and play my own stuff, so I don't use any of those sites.

Edit to say: You never stop learning, but now it seems that I learn more from my own mistakes pretty quickly.

Depends on how much effort you put into any particular thing. The great thing about guitar, is that when you finally start becoming proficient, you are also starting to enjoy it a lot.

No idea about the website you mention.

Others that are ALWAYS mentioned.

Marty Music.

Justin Guitar.

Active Melody.

Those 3 are free pretty much on YouTube. Hours and hours of free content from beginner up to high end intermediate.

I use guitar tricks. They have a huge catalog of lessons doing everything from beginner to advanced. I need to use it more tbh. I believe I got it for a year for 99 bucks, well worth it

Whether you choose an Acoustic or Electric I pray you dont become afflicted with G.A.S like so many of us.

Also, 20 minutes a day > 3 hours a week.

Good luck!

That's decent of him. Is it a pretty good one?

I do not know. It's an Austin he bought approximately ten years ago for $100.

I've seen some of those in shops, but I don't know anything about them. Maybe it will be a good one.

I think an online teacher can help with certain aspects of it, but only a face to face teacher can fully analyze your technique and give you pointers that might take years to discover on your own. One of my biggest regrets - not taking lessons early on.

Sounds like something you will replace if you get hooked. You will be “much too good” for that beginner guitar. Lol.
