Our time has come to say goodbye...

We are so thankful for the five wonderful years and memories with you, Baton Rouge! The journey has been incredibly fun at times and terrifying at others, but no matter what, our love for this city will always remain.

It is with heavy heart that our family has made the difficult decision to cease our restaurant Operations, and therefore permanently closing Lava Cantina in Baton Rouge. We will be using this as an opportunity to refocus our time and energy on our businesses related to the entertainment industry.

We look forward to presenting some outstanding, major concerts to the Baton Rouge market starting in 2019 with the first announcements being made within the next few weeks! Stay tuned to this Facebook page to be “in the know” on these awesome concert announcements and the venues where they’ll be held!

TO THE BATON ROUGE MUSIC COMMUNITY.... a sincere “thank you” for sharing your art with us and our guests over the years. We started this business to create a platform to showcase artists like you, and while we learned a ton from this experience and would change so many things, the love and passion you have for your craft will continue to inspire us to work hard and persevere through the good times and bad.

We love you all. Thank you for sharing your time with us...

Bye bye Blackbird

It sucks because I actually enjoyed all the tribute bands they had there. And this is just another blow to the Baton Rouge live entertainment situation which is getting more moribund by the day.

I don't understand their little tease about bringing "outstanding, major concerts" here in 2019. I didn't realize the owners were primarily promoters. I guess that explains the quality of the food at Lava Cantina. I'm not going to hold my breath. If the track records of the venues in this town are any indication, it'll just be another disappointment.

They had a few big names play there, Sebastian Bach, Scott Weiland, Everclear, and a few others. Not bad for a Mexican restaurant. I don't know what they mean by big but I wouldn't expect too much.

My band played there several times. We always enjoyed the venue. Built in PSS P.A., professional sound man, energized audiences - would like to see the place turned into a music only venue.

That’s sucks. I always went there when I came back to BR. Damn.

I wish The Loft was still around there too...

The Lava Cantina in metro Dallas gets pretty decent 80s-00s acts. MC Hammer, Gin Blossoms, Snoop Dogg, Lou Gramm have all played there in recent months.

It would be nice but probably impossible. I have a feeling the constant income of the restaurant was very much required to pay the rent in that prime spot. Can't be very cheap to operate there. Even with cutting out the largely Dallas-based tribute bands and scaling back waitstaff they couldn't make ends meet. Going to all music would be financial suicide.

Well now where the BR elite eat their bland Tex-Mex while a Skid Row cover band blares in their ears?

It's an odd pairing. It's weird watching a rock show and having a waiter walk right next to you with a tray of sizzling fajitas. You're like "Who the hell's eating dinner at 11 o'clock at night?"

Not to name-drop but me and some friends are friendly with Ian Moore (not sure if it's a name-drop if nobody knows him) and last time he was in town we hung out and talked about the venue situation in Baton Rouge. I was too embarrassed to say that given his drawing level he might consider Lava Cantina as opposed to his recent acoustic/solo listening room gigs here. Like most people, he'll just stick to New Orleans if he even bothers with this area at all.

BR venues:

the varsity
dyson house listening room
red dragon listening room
register bar
mid city ballroom
the parlor
the guru
manship theatre/Hartley vey room
texas club

Spanish moon when it returns

BR doesn't need another venue. it needs people to actually go out and support live music.

actually it absolutely could use a 200 person room that serves alcohol, has a diverse mix of touring/local also serves as nice hangout when there isn't a band playing. What it doesn't need is another listening room or event space.

Think the Earl in ATL, Gasa Gasa in NOLA etc.

I've never even heard of these places. Baton Rouge does have plenty of venues. Another one is not needed.

sorry -- another good one is needed. Won't happen though ... cluttered lineup across many mediocre booking calendars in boring, uninspired venues.

The Republic owned Moon might kickstart the town a bit ...

I am interested to see what they've done to the Moon. They have a show booked in February so hopefully it will be open by then. Its been closed since May I think. They always booked the same type of bands as Gasa Gasa and the Earl. I don't see that changing.

it'll be better IMO from what I've heard. Aaron will still do booking but nick the new owner who runs republic will be bringing in bands as well.

there's also the 524 southside arts center where punk/hardcore shows are happening all of the time.

it's just a space though and not a bar.

Hoping this is the case.

Anyone know when the moon will reopen and start rolling in acts?
