Vincent collaborated well with them, but left to his own wares....well, just listen to the wankery of the Vinnie Vincent Invasion, lol...

Paul does criticize himself, but he usually does it to justify himself before throwing someone else under the bus, lol...if you ever read his book, you might see that he rarely holds himself accountable for much of anything.

I always thought Ace was the better musician. However I liked Paul's solo album the best. When it came to song writing, Paul and Gene cranked them out early on. Once the 80's hit they collaborated with everyone. Hell Michael Bolton even wrote for them.

Monumental band, but best musician is a bit complicated, as it was probably Ace Frehley (and this says little).

Ace by far.
Hell, Vinnie Vincent was probably the second best musician. He wrote "War Machine" "Lick It Up" and "I Love it Loud"

Why'd he pass?

I just don't see KISS working with others.

I read somewhere that after the success of the ballad "Beth" KISS decided to record it themselves.

Here's a great version with Garth Brooks, who was a huge KISS fan.

Ace definitely had the best of the 4 solo albums. I love Snowblind and New York Groove.

his playing on that record is ridiculous. most of it sounds like he just stopped the tape & punched in recordings of him playing as fast as he possibly could--- correct key be damned.
I think he was just trying to show the guitar world that he was as fast as yngwie, gilbert, bouillet, becker, & the other shredders.

He didn't play anything like that on the follow up.
