This is an old album, but I've just come across it (trying to find some different music to listen too). She has a really nice alto voice and the songs are strong roots music (she sings old Kentucky coal mining songs).
Lawrence Jones (a man killed in a 1972 coal strike):

You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive (a sad one):

"Coal Tattoo" Live (the recording has some mic issues early but the standup bass and fiddle are strong):

I discovered the album after seeing her do Coal Tattoo at the Opry back in 2015. She has an amazing voice, and I have loved her music since hearing 18 Wheels and A Dozen Roses 30 years ago.
I like her version of Harlan, but my favorite version of that song has to be the one by Patty Loveless on her Mountain Soul album.

I'll have to check out the Patty Loveless version.

To me...nothing touches the original Darrell Scott version from Aloha From Nashville. Hard to believe that album is over 20 years old.

Make it the one from her Austin City Limits appearance. So good.
I’ve enjoyed the Patty Loveless version of that song for years, it I have never seen/heard the ACL version. If you don’t get chills watching that then you don’t know music.

Kathy Mattea is one of the most underrated female country artists of all time.
