Back when he first heard Prine, KK said "Prine is so good, we may have to break his thumbs".

Early jimmy Buffett was legit.

I don't give a frick. Comparing any era of Jimmy Buffett to John fricking Prine is a horrible analogy. Prine was a singular songwriting genius. Buffett doesn't belong in the same sentence.

Anyone else attend one of his House of Blues shows in New Orleans back in December 2009? He was so damn good. Iris Dement opened and sang with him.

I saw him there with Iris Dement, but in 1999. Great show. I thought he looked old then but had recovered from cancer surgery the previous year. There was a woman who sang with him on a couple of songs and honestly did not have a good voice. Found out later that it was his wife Fiona.

Bob Dylan on John Prine:
"Prine's stuff is pure Proustian existentialism. Midwestern mindtrips to the nth degree. And he writes beautiful songs. I remember when Kris Kristofferson first brought him on the scene. 'Sam Stone' featuring the wonderfully evocative line: 'There’s a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes, and Jesus Christ died for nothing I suppose.' All that stuff about 'Sam Stone', the soldier junkie daddy, and 'Donald and Lydia', where people make love from ten miles away. Nobody but Prine could write like that."

I saw him in early 90s at Texas Club in BTR, great show. Saw him again at jazzfest later in 90s. I have great regret that I didn't see the Tree of foregiveness tour, he played about an hour away and tkts were hard to get …

Early jimmy Buffett was legit. You can hate on the boomer bullshite he marketed later but he has a handful of classic country-ish albums.

Tin Cup Chalice
Captain and the Kid
Ballad of Spider John
He Went to Paris

All great fricking songs

Son of a Son of Sailor
A Pirate Looks At 40

Bunch more too.

Never understood the derision he gets from some

Imagine if Bob Dylan and Jimmy Buffet had a love child

I absolutely despise both of these artists. Spent the weekend listening to Nora En Pure and tons of deep house on my AirPod pros while I fixed up the basement and 2nd guest bedroom.

Death of an Unpopular Poet.
I am a fan of Prine and Dylan. There'a lot of Buffett ignorance in this thread.

In one of Prine's live riffs on the "Happy Enchilada" song, the lady requests it and he says, "Happy Enchilada? You sure you're not confusing me with Jimmy Buffett. He writes songs about food."

Haven't been on this board in a long time until today. I've been on an Americana deep dive during these viral times. Sad to see him go, truly a great poet. True to his words, half his ashes were spread along the Green River.

"Roosters layin' chickens, chickens layin' eggs,
Farm Machinery eatin' peoples' arms and legs...
I ain't hurtin' nobody, I ain't hurtin' no one."

I hope so. There have been a few quarantine youtube "shows". That can't be it.

He was in Austin 2 years ago or so. I passed on it. I suck....

If Eric Clapton climbs his arse on a stool anywhere in Texas soon, I am going.

I also passed on a Chris Cornell show as well... "Catch him next time." Yes I am butthurt.

John Prine's 'Sam Stone' & Blaze Foley's 'Clay Pigeons' just go together on playlists.
