I don't even know how to classify them.....
What are some of your favorite JJ Grey songs?
The Sweetest Thing
Sun is Shining Down
Long Way Home
Brighter Days
I Believe in Everything
Just a couple of my favorites, but I've never heard a song of theirs that I didn't like!! Here's to good southern music

they are so freakin' awesome!
I would certainly category them as all of the above and maybe even through in a "Funk" category to their name.

I have seen them a few times, the most recent being at the SAE house here a couple of years ago. Needless to say, they were awesome. The horn section made it sound so sweet.

I'm partial to Lochloosa, prolly Dirtfloorcracker. Nice niche of southern funk soul groove.

my two favorites.
i'd say southern rock with an occasional blues...definitely not soul.

I don't know man, his voice, IMHO, sure has a lot of it.

They make some damn good music, not real sure how to classify it. I probably have more fun at their concerts than I do at any other one I've been to.

oh, no doubt dude's got a lot of soul to that voice, but a soulful voice does not equal soul genre, IMO.
for example, Grace Potter has one of the most soulful voices i've ever heard live...but she's rock/country rock.

True that. I have the Brighter Days dvd at home and it has a lot of interviews in between songs. One of the interviews, if I remember correctly, JJ says what he thinks they are classified as.
I'll have to watch it tonight

I have a tendency to classify him as southern soul

Southern soul....that's what I'm thinking as well.....mixed in with a little blues.
Who else would you put in this same genre?

Alabama Shakes
They're pretty much the only modern band I see close to this sound and even it is a stretch.
I just think the imagery that the phrase Southern Soul brings to mind is exactly the sound Mofro strives to personify

Blackwater is good and I've always liked 6 ways from Sunday. Both good songs. And genre doesn't mean shite. They are good.
