Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit - Live from the Ryman released today. One listen in and it's pretty good. Nice mixture of songs from his two solo albums and his most recent one with the 400 unit.
Not as good as "Live from Alabama" imo, but obviously all different songs. Bigger venue so the sound is a bit different.

pretty disappointed that they opted to go with a single live album of songs picked from the 6 shows rather than a full show or double live album

Love the idea but I'm disappointed in the track list. Still a great album.

How did they not put any of the Tom Petty covers on here

I really hate Super 8. That song makes me irrationally mad. It doesn't fit at all on Southeastern and takes away from an otherwise brilliant record.

I've always thought the same thing. I don't care for the song in general and it definitely doesn't fit on that album.

I feel that way about several songs on most of his albums. Southeastern and Something More Than Free are to me the only 2 that are strong from start to finish, even with both having some bad songs on them.

Disagree 100%. It’s part of the story of the album. Where he was and where he is going.

Also, all of the songs are from the last three albums, I assume because he didn’t want to pay royalties to the other. It really downplays the depth of his catalog. Pretty weak that of 6 shows, he didn’t even give us the equivalent to one full show. The mixing is meh too. Also, none of the cool covers that he did on this run.
It is nice to have live versions of a few of the newer songs, but other than that, you’re better off watching a full concert on YouTube.

I think he's committed to put the rest of the catalog in a separate classification in terms of his career, which is fine but some songs like Codeine and Streetlights fall through the cracks between live albums. Overall, Ryman is a solid recording IMO. Like many live recordings, the mix feels a little empty at times.
--Hope is a good starter, but the rest of the A-side drifts off a bit, even if Shires' fiddle on Flagship makes it better than the original. However, it's a familiar start if you keep up with the setlists of 2017
--Cumberland bangs for me...Jimbo's bass run is exceptional. SMTF drags a bit getting started, but I like the speed of Life You Chose better than the album track. Elephant always delivers, as raw as it gets
--Flying Over Water is one of my favorites in Jason's catalog, I wish Stockholm would have found its way onto the setlist too. Last of My Kind didn't need 7 mins; trim it to 4 mins and add another track
--Cover Me Up is an absolute treasure EVERY time...it'll go down as his signature song among so many others. Super 8 is polarizing as a track on Southeastern, but I'd argue it fits less among the tracks closing out this record (even though it's a continual live staple). I'd have preferred one of the Petty covers, or even a fun, bouncy If It Takes a Lifetime
--I'm okay with Vampires as the closer without an encore. A truly great song; stands on its own...but I wouldn't have complained if Relatively Easy found it's place somewhere, even as the closer.
Again, it goes back to pubbing the most recent record, which I understand.
Songs by record:
Southeastern - 4
SMTF: 4
Nashville: 5

I think the best live album he ever did was the “Live at Austin City Limits” DVD. Granted, it wasn’t released as an album.
I converted the DVD to audio tracks and listen to it as if it were a live audio album.
Although this release only goes through Southeastern.

Good album, but there’s nothing really to it. All the songs sound like studio versions with a little audience sounds added in. The best part is on cover me up when he sings “I sobered up, I swore off that stuff, forever this time.” Audience always gives him a big applause on that one and I love it.

This is fantastic.
Cover me up is something special
I wish there were more songs

I had heard or read somewhere that was the point, that because he had already released live albums with material from the previous records that he wouldn't do it again
