Any love for john David Souther on the board. Maybe the coolest and most talented of the West Coast "country rock"
singer- songwriters. Practically everyone in the busniess did his songs.

Wrote or co-wrote huge hits for others (like the Eagles "Heartache Tonight", "Best of My Love", and Henley's "Heart of the Matter".

Dated Stevie Nicks and Linda Ronstadt.

Not a bad track record.

As good looking as she was, this isn't necessarily a whole lot about which to brag.

Kind of like saying, "Breathed air in the 1970s" or "Saw a sunrise, once."

Er, that would be Gene Clark

Even if you limited it to the El Lay/Hollywood/Yacht Rock types, it would still be Warren Zevon

However JD Souther allegedly was the inspiration for this classic, which is something

I love Zevon. But I was thinking more in the country vein. Gene Clark was great, but doesn’t t quite match Souther’s catalogue as an individual apart from a group.

Souther was as solid a songwriter you're going to find on the border between country and rock.

But, you have those cats writing songs for Poco, plus Mentor and Paul Williams all in this conversation.

He just played the Red Dragon in BR back in March. Tickets were $100 and I didn’t want to go that bad, but I bet it was awesome.

Yea I know. It is a small, 100 person, non-profit venue, so I’m guessing that is what they needed to charge to cover his booking fee. I believe it still sold out.

I will say that Richie Furay knocked it out of the park with "Kind Woman".

I'm not sure the guy even played. I know something went down and the guy that owns the Dragon was saying how unprofessional the guy was and that he was a straight up a-hole.

From Song Meaning website.... RE: Jesus Was A Cross Builder

Got a live copy of this and she introduces this song with a little explanation of it:

"Um, this song I just wrote a little while ago, and someone told me they heard it on the radio today-- it just came out two days ago, and um... I wanted to write a song about this principle: the lower down you go to gain your momentum from, the higher up it will propel ya, but I couldn't think of a way to say that poetically... and I happened to stumble across this real obscure theological fact, and that is that Jesus was a cross maker. That really got in my head, and I knew I had to write a song about it.

Same time, I was having a really unhappy romance with this guy: he was a bandit, and a heartbreaker. So one morning I woke up and realised that "he's a bandit and a heartbreaker" rhymes with "but Jesus was a crossmaker". And I knew that even that wretched bastard was not beyond redemption. It's true, it's true; I swear. It saved me, this song. It was writing this song or suicide, y'know?"

The BBC did a radio doc on Judee Sill which had an interview w/JDS. He admitted the song was about him.

Was a DOUCHE when he came to the red dragon. Waste of $100 ... couldn’t even show up on time and acted like he was above the place
