Well, it definitely isn't blink 182 or green day like you've advocated before.

Radiohead and Phish are the two most important bands of the 90s hands down. Honorable mention to Modest Mouse.

I saw about 5 phish shows in the mid 90s and HATED it, but had an ex that kept dragging me to shows. in the fall of 97 I became friends with a dude that had a whole mess of summer 97 tapes that started changing my mind about them. then I saw the hour long runaway jim show in Worcester and was hooked.

Can you expound on this? I'm not disagreeing, I'm just curious.

They've changed the music scene. Like Heady Brosevelt pointed out earlier. "Phish has sold out Madison Square Garden, the most famous arena in the world, a whopping 30 times- including 7 NYE shows.

Bonnaroo and other modern festivals got their blueprints from Phish festivals."

Phish carried on the grateful dead's legacy and has promoted live music directly and indirectly since they formed in '85.

eta: if they aren't the most important band of the 90s then who is?

RCHP, Pearl Jam, Jane's Addiction, and bands like that were way more important in the 90's than Phish. The 90's were important to Phish because it was their best years.

I would have said RHCP, but didn't they kind of drop off popularity at that point because of Frusciante's (sp?) absence. Or am I getting time periods mixed up.

Any Tool love? or Rage?

Those bands were way more important to what the 90s were musically, but Phish was way more important for what the music industry has become today.

I really don't think that the 'music scene' was changed around Phish.

There aren't a ton of popular jam bands. If Phish were so damn important then there would be more of their style music around. And, as pointed out numerous times by numerous people, there simply isn't a lot of it out there.

The only example I'm hearing is festivals. I think one could argue both ways about Phish being what festivals model themselves after.

I don't think festivals are the most important thing in the music industry, so how could Phish be the most important if that is their only major contribution?

Nirvana was the most important band of the 90's as far as music, culture, the way records were made, the way rock music was presented.

You have to understand that nirvana dethroned Michael Jackson, prince, Madonna, and hair metal as a whole.

Nirvana changed the music industry

I don't think any of the bands in the 90's "changed the music landscape"

Ughhh Nirvana.

They would be a minor blip in music history had Kurt Cobain not turned his head into a flower pot.

It's beginning to feel that way. I hate this new wave of festivals.

no he can't. He was literally 8 years old when Phish was at there peak in the mid to late 90's.

his only arguments about phish is the shite he regurgitates from PT.com. I love phish but can't stand to listen to him discuss the band.
