Is Merle being left out of The Highwaymen one of the greatest snubs of all time?

I mean, how the hell was he not a member of that group?

Side note: I’ve read a few books Johnny Cash put out, and in one of them he went on and on about how close he was to Merle, loved his old past, etc.
When it came to Willie, he basically said he didn’t really ever get to know Willie, and left it at that. I thought it was weird that they were in the same era, similar star power, part of that group together, etc., yet he just glossed over him and had nothing good to say.
It was almost like there was unspoken bad blood.

Merle lived what he sang. “Hungry Eyes” sounds like a song right out of the Dust Bowl. Which Merle’s family was.
Eta: Merle was the best songwriter out of that group of guys too.

Cash said “Merle lived the life I sang about” , paraphrasing.

From Waylon's autobiography:
"Merle Haggard and his manager, Fuzzy Owens (sic), got me in a poker game and cleaned me out. I had four or five thousand dollars on me, and they won everything. They were there to get my money. That was it. I think Merle is a great singer and songwriter, and probably he was in as bad a shape as I was, but we've never been close since that night. I can still remember their faces. When I was broke, they said their good-byes and left. I never forgot that."
So, I'm thinking Waylon probably wouldn't have done Highwaymen with Merle, and Willie and Waylon were very tight.

That is the cowboy shite that made old country the legendary genre it was.
Days gone by right there.

I’m as big a Waylon fan as there is. He’s probably my favorite artist out of those guys. But that just sounds like sour grapes to me. I mean, it’s not like they forced him to gamble his money away.

Hell, Cash lived that life too. Especially his childhood. I can’t imagine what it’s like to be as poor as they were. It’s very hard for a 21st century person in the US to know that type of poverty.
My mom asked my grandfather, who was born in Red Lick, Texas in 1936 what his favorite Christmas present was as a child. Pop thought about it for a second and said “a white-walled tire.” Mom asked him how old he was when he got it and he said about 10 years old.
One white-walled tire. That’s poor as hell. But I bet they were a closer family than a lot of families are nowadays.

My grandmother is still with us, spry at 91. From the hills of Columbia, La.
I showed her pics of my daughter riding her new bike a few years ago and she said “that’s awesome. I wish I had gotten to learn. We were too poor to afford a bike.”

My mom grew up in pretty much the same era as your grandfather and I remember her talking about the Christmas she got an ink pen. And was thrilled with it

Plus there were probably plenty of cocaine benders he went on where he blew through more than 4-5 grand.

Merle turned them down.
"On the subject of supergroups, Broadway wondered why Merle never joined the Highwaymen, but it apparently wasn’t because they didn’t want him. “I was asked,” Merle said. “I was asked to become a fifth member, and I turned it down because I said hell, it will cut the money down so low so the four of you guys won’t even want to do it. But they did offer me a part … When you’re touring the world, you’ve got to take the economics in play. It’s going to cost a lot of money to do that. When you’ve got 15 or 20 people traveling with you, you know, it’s a big deal."
