Porcupine Tree for sure

When people throw out the term Progressive... they really mean "different"... but Really what they mean is Psychedelic-spaced out music you can burn one to.

King Crimson
YES
ELP
Genesis

No one mentioned The Mars Volta... maybe not top ten.

Mars Volta deserve a mention if we talking Mastodon in this light

If you like Mars Volta then check out Thank You Scientist. I just discovered them a few weeks ago and their new album Stranger Heads Prevail is really good. Really refreshing prog rock.

Good to see another Thank You Scientist fan. I have been a fan for a long time and have seen them live once. Hopefully get to see them when they come to NOLA early 2017.

That's pretty much what it became. It started out as rock music with other (often classical) influences. So there were a lot of time & key signature changes, varying tempos, unusual (for rock) chord changes and was just in general more complicated than rock 'n roll.

At what venue? Their Facebook page has not indicated any such announcement.

I think PF is the most easily digestible of the prog bands mentioned therefore a lot of people will give them the nod.

I consider Pink Floyd the greatest band of all time, period, but I don't really consider them "prog rock." To me they are just their own thing. No one sounds like them, although their influence is apparent everywhere. I can see why some might put them in the prog category, though, and if we include them, then obviously they win.

I agree and so does Gilmour. I heard an interview with him and the interviewer said something about prog rock and Gilmour winced. He said that a lot of people group them in that category but he didn't really see what they had in common with bands like Genesis, Yes and King Crimson.

King Crimson pretty much invented the genre. They were consistently great through the 70s and 80s.

I know plenty, including myself. True, they take a while to "get" but you can like them and not worship them.
