Is Jerry Jeff Walker Underrated?

As I've stated here before, Jerry Jeff is top 10 all time country musicians in my book. His songwriting is only behind TVZ and Hank imo, and his actual singing is pretty damn good too. Anyone else agree that JJW is vastly underrated?

I don't think he's underrated, he's just OLD. Dude's a legend, he's up there with Willie and Merle, etc. I saw him for his 69th and he was awesome. I think everyone who knows anything about country music knows how awesome JJW is.

I saw him in the rain at the Red River Revel in Shreveport a few years ago. Sparse crowd, my GF at the time went up and talked to him after the show. She was from Austin and had connections in the music business.

I love JJW, but don't think he is underrated by people who know his music. He's just unknown by the majority of mainstream radio listeners. Good songwriter (not on the level of TVZ or Kristofferson), fun shows. His voice fits his persona/music, but not a top 10 voice.
Discovered his show "Texas Connection" on youtube a while back (show from the early 90's on TNN).

Like I stated in the OP, his songwriting isn't on the same level as TVZ and you're right about kristofferson as well. I still feel that he's only one step below that group though, which still puts him in some pretty heady company.
Another country musician that seems to get pushed to the wayside pretty often is Dwight Yoakam. Two Doors Down, Home For Sale, I Sang Dixie, Things Change- are all better than any song currently getting airtime on country radio.

He's my favorite country singer/songwriter all time. It's not even close. Seen him live 4 times and enjoyed them all. One was an acoustic show which was a real treat. In my experience people who stick to mainstream country music have no clue who he is. Damn shame.

Also, freaked me out when I found this clip. Special guest at Garth Brooks final show. Show was on South Padre in a 40 degree monsoon, old boy held up pretty well in the rough weather.

I think he is right where he wants to be. I heard Matk Chestnutt say that if he only played in bars for the rest of his career, he would be satisfied. I think to an extent Jerry Jeff probably feels the same way.

I think you're at least close to being spot on. When I saw his acoustic show(200 people max in the audience) he said he pretty much plays where he wants to. He'll schedule a show in the northeast so he can do some fly fishing. He'll schedule a show in our area when he wants some good cajun food. And so on and so on. God bless him for being at a level where he can do what he wants. He's had his place in Belize for years and spends most of the rest of the year based out of Texas. He knows he could have been a lot bigger nationally, but he's satisfied with what he's had and what he has now.

I'm pretty sure if I were a successful musician that's exactly how I would be. Screw all that touring and playing shows so big you can't even see the people in the crowd. I'm not a huge fan of big concerts in general though.
