Folk was huge for a few years with Mumford and sons, lumineers, of monster and men, etc and now you don't really see any of these types of bands on radio or anything of relevancy. Surprised house music and edm has lasted as long as it has

No shite.
If we look for trends in music based on radio play, we're fricked.

Mumford went electric and killed indie folk. It's just like when Dylan plugged in at Newport.

Maybe it is for the masses...I saw Gillian Welch with The Dave Rawlings Machine in December, I saw Robert Earl Keen last night (meh), and I'm going to see John Prine in April. They haven't had the airplay of the Folk/Indie bands to the extent of Mumford and Sons or the Avett Brothers. Still, they are pretty well know and are thriving in the communities that have traditionally supported them.
There is one local radio station that plays their stuff, and they have a limited range...fortunately, they stream.

Have literally never heard a Prine song on the radio. Such a shame for an American treasure.

I hear at least one Prine song every couple of days on the station I linked. I used to stream it when I would travel to Mexico. It would freak everybody in the office out when I would crank up some Tod Snider.

saturating vocals in reverb just doesnt do it for me.

I was never a fan of any of those groups.
However, I consider bands such as Dawes, Boy & Bear, and Bon Iver a take of the folk/indie genre. I enjoy them and they are all pretty prevalent on today's radio.

I hope so. Those types of bands were like the hair metal, nu metal, grunge, etc. of this time.
I also don't really think of them as folk or indie.

did they die or just vanish?
They were popular as frick like 3-4 years ago. I just looked on spotify, they have had nothing since.

I watched a video of them singing that last night. I also ran across this. Prine...1982 singing Paradise with Vince Gill and Marty Stuart.

I still like the Head and the Heart and Lord Huron. Not sure that they're really in that niche, though.
I hope The Head and the Heart release another album soon. Saw them live, and it was a really fun show.

I'd say the nail in the coffin is that insipid "Come Awake" song that they hammer to death on those Cox Homelife commercials.
I think indie folk will eventually be seen as a laughably idiotic trend/mistake of this decade. If there's any hope for the perception of hindsight in the future, that is.

First THATH album is still amazing. Very good live show.
As for indie folk, it's run its course to some extent, but a lot of what some might put in that indie/folk/americana genre was never that radio friendly to begin with, and those acts will continue to carry a solid fan base and sell out the venues they frequent.

It's now under the umbrella name of "Americana".
