I'm embarrassed to ask, but....I need a crash course in the Allman Brothers

I really like that style of music, and I know being from GA I should know more about them than I do. But honestly, I don't know much about them at all. I've really only heard their popular songs, and the only ones of theirs I have on my ipod/computer are Melissa, Blue Sky, and Whipping Post.
Here's what I think happened. I will say I'm NOT a big fan of jam bands, or maybe not jam bands necessarily but jam songs that go for 15 minutes. So I think in high school when I first got introduced to them I heard a few of those and basically shut 'em out.
But I really truly want to be an ABB fan, I just need some guidance. So, what are the 5 or 10 absolute quintessential, must-have songs of theirs to get a beginner started on the right track?

Just turn on live at the Filmore and let go for a few hours. Duane will take care of the rest I promise. If you don't like them after that album is over give up and move on because the allman brother's aren't for you.

Don't sweat it if they're not your thing. I don't put them up there that high. I like a few of their songs but that's about it. That said, they were easily the best sounding band I've ever heard at jazz fest or any outdoor venue. But to me that's where they shine as a band, live, more than any other band I can think of.

Good. I agree. Just don't call them "southern rock" or a "jam band".
They are one of the greatest American bands of all time. They have fused blues, jazz and rock more completely, inventively and tastefully than any band in history.

"Live at Filmore East" is in the top five live albums of all time. Listen and change your life. However, you should also go back and listen to "The Allman Brothers Band" and "Idlewild South", their first two albums. Those first two plus the live album is the best music they ever recorded.
I'm old enough to have seen the band prior to Duane and Berry's deaths. I've seen lots of live shows, but they were as good live as any I've ever seen.

So true...the Allman Bros are not about 'a few songs' it's about their overall sound, and in particular- their Live sound!!

Basically the Allman Brothers are everything that is good and "right" about music. They encompass every romantic image you could picture regarding music.
Just a group of insanely skilled musicians playing for the sheer love of their craft. Every one of them absolutely adore what they do and everyone of them are in the elite category in their respective instruments.
That right there is impressive enough but what's even more mind numbing is that they have maintained that definition throughout every one of their lineup changes.
The allman brothers may not be for every one and I'm sure that there are people who don't like them but no one, who knows anything about music what so ever, can say that they aren't one of the most talented and complete bands of all time.
I firmly and wholeheartedly think that the original ABB lineup is the most talented band to ever play together.
