75% of people under 40 have probably never heard of Van Morrison at all
Them was very successful in the UK and had at least two top 40 hits in the US. They did the original version of "Gloria", a concert staple for many bands. They qualify as much as any other band here.

The deal with VM with Them is that he was the front man...the lead singer.
Jimi Hendrix with Little Richard or Isley Brothers is not quite the same. He didn't truly get any recognition at that time...not like McCartney, Henley, Michael Jackson and so on.
But again, it's all in fun.
