But he would have been a bigger presence. He loved giving interviews and being the center of attention. We would have had decades of him giving his opinion on everything under the sun... He would have been a frequent guest on Letterman.

Let's not go overboard... Elton John was in Bluesology, technically Jimi Hendrix was in The Jimi Hendrix Experience.

A solo career is a solo career no matter if one hits success in a different genre of music as a crossover artists. There are others who have done that.
As far as John Lennon’s continued fame, it continued mostly to his controversial politics and propaganda and not his music. You are correct in saying he thrived on being the center of attention. I would’ve loved to hear a debate between him and Ted Nugent.

Well you can name any solo performer and odds are, they started off in a band whether you are familiar or not (I think thats his point)

I get that, but Elton John was not known at all until he began his solo career, so he never was in a successful group. All solo artists have a band behind them, but may have never been a member of a band who ever saw success to begin with. Here’s some just to name a few:
