used to feel the exact same way. But after watching Some Kind of Monster and reading a couple books on Metallica, lyrically it's pretty interesting. I've grown to quite like some of the tracks off of it. It's a real bruiser of an album.

The Black album is still one I can't listen to. Absolutly cannot stand the music, much less the horrible vocal affectations and what not James does.

Death Magnetic is shite.

Hardwired..... is fricking awesome.

There are a few nice riffs and grooves on St. Anger, but the vocals are not even good, bad. Watching SKOM didn't change the way I felt about it, either. The Black album was great, if you don't listen to the top 3 tracks on it. I will never listen to Enter Sandman again, and haven't for nearly 15 years.

Agree, Hardwired is great.

I’m not saying Lars is great but he works well with the band. IMO Kirk is the musical weak link and I idolized that guy growing up playing guitar. His leads for the last 25 years have been tired unoriginal pentatonic rips. His playing has shown no improvement since Puppets.

Agreed on this. Watch & listen to footage of Kirk on the Master of Puppets & Justice albums & tour. He resembles what a guitar god & legend should be. He was unreal. Starting with Black album on its like he decides to be a blues rock guy & lost all of his speed chops.

Orion - bass track(s), drum track only

Partake of the unadulterated awesomeness that is Cliff.

Starting to? I was floored several years ago when I saw the movie (Through the Never) and it ended with them playing Orion "live" over the credits. On a good stereo, it might be the best-sounding piece of music of all time. LINK

If I could rebuild that band, say..from 2000 forward, I would keep Newsted and replace Lars with Dave Lombardo.

Now wouldn't THAT be something.

Wow. I was thinking I was the only person who thought this. This live version of Orion is incredible. Agreed.

For all the grief Lars gets, there sure are a lot of Metallica songs where his drum parts really stand out and make the song rock. 'One', just for an example.

IMO, Bob Rock producing and Jason leaving had the biggest impact on Metallica.

Jason leaving actually gave them the kick in the butt to get back to making the music they should have been making all along. They realized they had completely lost thier way. They admit this in the documentary.

I don't like that either, though. The Loads are great as is Garage Inc. I don't see any reason to run them down and I get massive enjoyment from them. I understand where St. Anger fits in the canon, and I appreciate it about as best I can. Someone on here said Death Magnetic sux. I think that's crazy. James Hetfield is a fricked up person with a fricked up childhood and I commend him on a lifetime of trying to address that as best he could. If that didn't perfectly please Metallica fans, then so be it. It's kind of like being mad at Dave Mustaine because every Megadeth offering isn't perfect. IMO, they've both provided me with almost infinite utility for not much money spent by me. I'm willing to cut them lots of slack.
