How underrated is Stax records?

They seem to be forgotten about at times. They rivaled Motown for many years. Motown was the softer more pop sounding R&B, where as Stax was more in your face and gritty with their blaring horns and thumping bass lines. Featuring
Otis Redding
Booker T & the MGs
Issac Hayes
Sam & Dave
The Staple Singers
Wilson Pickett
Albert King
(Are all in the rock n roll hall of fame) and also Carla Thomas, Rufus Thomas, William Bell, Mar-Keys, And Johnny Taylor.
You may not know some the artists but you know the songs

Extremely. Its crazy to me when people who enjoy music have never heard of stax.
If you're ever in Memphis the stax museum is rad. They have a hall with every album cover they put out which is really neat. They also have otis' green and gold caddy.

I've always preferred the grittier soul from Stax over Motown recordings.

Rufus Thomas was a hell of a show man, as were virtually every other artist on Stax, especially Otis Redding and Sam & Dave.
I too prefer the gritty sound of Stax over Motown.
Stax was more geared towards the black community, although it was owned by a white guy and his sister and Mar-Keys and Booker T and the MGs had white members

If you've never seen Sam & Dave perform you are seriously missing out. They were awesome showmen, like James Brown x 4!
Also Otis at Monterey Pop was one of the all-time great performances.
