These 1st 4 songs of this album, The Search for Everything, have got me listening to them every chance i can get throughout the day. Moving on and Getting Over is a real funky song that sounds like some Dead & Co. influence. Changing has some Born & Raised/ Battle Studies influence and Your Going to Live Forever in Me sounds like Friends Lovers or Nothing. These songs have made John Mayer someone to look out for with 2017 no in effect.

Thoughts?

Absolutely not. He may have changed his game, but he's done nothing game-changing.

I like john mayer a lot, been impressed with his chord vocab and phrasing since inside wants out, but he's not a game changer. It's impressive that a singer songwriter has stayed "famously" relevant in the scene since music today is so overproduced and upbeat, but hes not a revolutionary song writer or player. I think he's close though, if he could write another album like continuum I'll revisit, but I thought battle studies was sub par.

Not from what I've heard so far.

I don't know why Born and Raised is always slept on. That's easily his second best record behind Continuum.

I too think BS is subpar, and it is his most plastic album IMO
Paradise Valley is meh as well.

He has a strong enough claim for one of the best of this era.

Continuum
Try! (trio album)
Where the Light Is
Born and Raised

these are all A+, and Continuum is going to continue to age super well. It still sounds as good today as 10 years ago. Now he is playing with Grateful Dead and solidifying himself as one of the best guitarist of this time. I'm positive I'll still be listening to his stuff 20+ years from now. He has some timeless stuff, just wish he avoided some of the pop bullshite.

I always wonder what the perception of John Mayer would be had he not of put of garbage like "Your Body is a Wonderland"

Likely wouldn't be anywhere near as famous, but probably much more respected. Like him or not, he is an outstanding guitarist.

what does any of this have to do with "changing the game"? You know artists switch up their sound all the time right?

He really is, in fact musically he's a genius. The problem is that he can never seem to find his sound. Every time he plays something he hears somebody else in it. He can never find something that's uniquely his.

Its not so much the sound, but the delivery of the album. 4 songs a month, all digital every month until completion. I like the first 4, and am anticipating the next release.

I dont know how "game changing" it is. I was skeptical at first, but am definitely looking forward to the next batch

He is a talented guy, but everything I ever hear from him just gives me this vibe of a high school guy trying to get in a girls pants. Everything just sounds kinda sappy to me. Just my .02.

Without having listened to any of his new album I'm going to go ahead and say no, he has not changed the game in any way.

That sums it up really well for me. But it mostly applies to his earlier work. I thought that Continuum and the Trio stuff was going to be a turning point for him but the new material sounds more like pre-Continuum to me.

I agree with you on that about his lyrics. I wish he would either sing about different stuff or sing less because his guitar work is incredible, but the sappy always about a girl songs definitely turn me away sometimes.

Go watch videos of him play and your opinion might change.

Also, I find it comical when grown men judge other grown men's taste in music like it says something about them.
