It's a Les Paul Jr., they've been building them that way forever. It's a classic sound.

My wife had a good idea. Make this our little girl's first guitar, and let her decide what to put on it. I'm going to put a Celtic Cross on it first and a Celtic Knot on the headstock, after that she can put butterflies and hummingbirds on it

All Les Paul guitars (Standards, Customs, Juniors, Specials) came factory with P-90s from the series debut in 1952 until the unveiling of the patent-applied-for dual coil "humbucker" in 1957. Standards and Customs got the PAFs, Juniors and Specials remained P-90 driven exclusively. That has basically stuck to the present day from a production series guitars standpoint ... they've had some limited/exclusive runs at various times where they mixed things up a bit.

Not to highjack, but can you recommend an acoustic for a beginner that I can grow in to between the 400-600 range?

My favorite acoustics in that price range are Seagulls.
