I also reject the anti-UYI sentiments heard in this thread. Both albums are crushing masterpieces, even though they were "different" than Appetite
I feel the same way. They weren't going to top Appetite, regardless of how great they were. Appetite, Lies, and UYI 1/2 were very different and that's what I love about GNR.

I have no problem whatsoever with them adding long epics, keys and ballads to their music in the early 90s.

Yeah - I don't get that either. It was a more mature, polished sound and I do prefer the more raw, wilder Appetitie and Lies, but UYI was extremely well down and produced - like Appetite for Destruction meets Hysteria (Def Leppard).

But, at their best, they were a great rock and roll band

without a doubt.

This thread inspired me to hit up youtube for some vintage GNR. Love the Paradise City video....the craziness of the live music coupled with the shots of the guys just hanging out around town, record shops etc.....must have been one helluva good time.

From wiki
Half of the music video was filmed at Giants Stadium in New Jersey while Guns N' Roses were on tour with Aerosmith, one of their major influences. Midway through the video, they are seen boarding the Concorde jet so they can make an appearance in England at the Monsters of Rock concert at Donington Park and return as quickly as possible to the USA to continue touring. They thought the footage taken at the concert would be good for the music video and a proper show of respect to the 2 people who had died while Guns N' Roses were performing. Duff can also be seen wearing an Aerosmith "wings logo" t-shirt in the video, notably seen at 5:19.

Nigel Dick directed the video. At that time it was the biggest video he'd ever done. The video cost $200,000. $45,000 had to be paid to the unions at Giants Stadium for carrying 100 camera cases 30 yards from a parking lot to the stadium. The video was shot with six cameras in front of 77,000 people.

Lies

One in a Million.....no one could get away with a song like that in today's America.

Monsters of Rock concert at Donington Park

That was the 1988 show, headlined by Maiden. I weep when I see this poster:

You might recognize it from the fan pissing against the wall which bears it outside of Castle Donington at the very beginning of the Video for The Clairvoyant

Maiden with a little DLR, Megadeth and Guns sprinkled in?

I understand that later on it took him 60 takes or whatever to do Civil War in the studio.

I read where the producer Mike Clink said that what you hear on the recorded version today is a composite of so many takes that he lost count. He said producing and editing the drum track was by far one of the hardest things he's ever done.

Bump for the Slash show tomorrow. I may end up losing my voice.

I assume this is no longer Slash's Snakepit, but does he ever play "Serial Killer"? That was the only song I liked.

This Slash's band with Myles Kennedy. They are awesome in every aspect. And they've played Serial Killer once on the fall tour so far.
