Decent video. It did not give me the strength, dexterity, chord location knowledge I so lack though..

Hell no!!!
The world is just not ready for me yet.
I will unleash my acoustic guitar styling a when ready. Not a moment sooner.

I've been playing acoustics for year and I still have trouble with a B chord. Its weird because other barre chords (Bm, F, Fm) are super easy.

Bb is tougher for me but it doesn't come up that often. I don't really have that much trouble with barres but if I'm playing a song that's all barre chords, my hand gets fatigued and sometimes cramps up. This video made the point that you don't have to squeeze the neck like you're trying to snap it in two. So I'll try to position my hand better, tuck my elbow in and not grip so hard.

Man, I struggle with the same issue. I had seen this video before and tried this technique with better results.

The usual B, B-flat etc are A-shaped barre chords, while the usual F, G, etc are E-shaped. Learn the CAGED system.
If you want a barre chord challenge, try Cavatina from "The Deer Hunter" arranged for solo guitar.

Try playing the Flamingos' version of "I Only Have Eyes For You". You go through the whole gamut of barre chords in the first two measures of music.

Yes I know. Not really sure what your point is.

I watched a video on CAGED and I didn't really get much out of it. I'm probably missing something.

For me knowing and understanding is not the same as being able to play it well. Of course it's just a matter of practice, but finding the time is hard with two little ones.

Very true. If it's possible, dedicate a small amount of time as often as you can, maybe after they go to bed, to practicing. Even if it's only 15 minutes, it will still help.

Hell its the opposite for me. I can (and did) watch this and other videos. Can hold all the shapes fairly well, but now what? I understand shite about music and theory and time signatures. How far up the neck should a shape move? Half step? Whole? Some sound like dogshit, some I find by accident and realize that it must be a chord.
My next major hurdle will be stretches and any my pinkie ever having to fret over the top of a chord. A-minor with a GBass for instance.
My mind goes over all of this when I really should be playing Smoke on the Water and Every Rose type songs.

You replied to a message talking about B with a comment about B-flat, as if they're essentially different, and they're not. Naming chords like that is also ambiguous.

My point comes from CAGED.

No I said Bb was more difficult for me. That's because it's a bigger stretch.

My bad. The difference is only like 1/8" on a 25.5" scale neck, and it's a simple shape, so that just didn't register. Sorry.

It's all good. For those A-shape barres, I flatten out either my ring or pinkie finger across the D-G-B strings. My ring finger is better at it because it's stronger but Bb is more of a reach with that finger. On the other hand (no pun intended) my pinkie isn't as strong. It isn't as if I can't play it at all; it's just more difficult for me than B.

I use my pinkie. I can't do it with the ring finger at all. The distal joint will not hyperextend on my ring fingers, i.e. it won't flatten out sufficiently. I guess because I use my pinkie, I don't perceive any real difference between the A-shaped chords only a fret apart.

Makes sense, Spock. I should probably work on strengthening my little finger.
wannabe, if you want to start a thread about music theory, I'll try to answer whatever questions you have. Although I'm not (yet) a CAGED disciple, I feel like I understand music theory to a reasonable extent. I know how keys and scales work and how chords are constructed.

How little? Buy them guitars, teach them, practice while you teach.
That's my plan with my son

Getting them interested in music from an early age sounds like a great idea until a one year old barfs directly into your Strat's tremolo assembly. Try cleaning that out.
