Guitar buying question

Been playing a long time, but not what you'd call a serious player. Of the "real" guitars out there, as opposed to toys, I've never owned anything but Fender/Gibson.
Walk up on a Paul Reed Smith (called an SE model maybe?), $400, in a pawn shop, great shape, same guitar all over internet for $400, and almost bought it, but decided if I was going to just spend 400 on a guitar, I'd see what was out there.....here's what I found/cpl questions.....
1. Instead of a $400 PRS SE, I could get an Epiphone Les Paul. Played these before, felt just like a Gibson to me, lil lighter, ears are too shitty to tell the differnce, this guitar's beautiful, great shape, also 400.
2. Some hollow body or semi hollow body Gretch (sp)? Great shape, lots of shiny stuff on this one, also 400.
3. An (don't laugh) Ibanez, or as some of my guitar snob friends call them, "I Been Had's", for 400 as well, and I know for sure this guitar costed about 650 new. I said "don't laugh" because I really do like Ibanez stuff, as far as what you get for what you give.
So, got 400, can get a PRS se, Epi LP, some kinda gretch, an Ibanez, all great shape.
Also - how much y'all think a pawn shop paid for something stickered at 400, how much will they take you think?

Ibanez makes shite and they make really good guitars. I know their higher end basses are nice as shite to play.

That Gretch sounds like a good deal if everything's in good shape.
Also Epiphones are pretty decent usually. In some ways they're better structurally than Gibsons. You may need to replace the pickups but that's no big deal.

I bought a PRS SE custom 24 in perfect condition used at Guitar Center for %279.00, about 6 months ago, it is a excellent guitar. I have been watching them on Ebay, and there have been a few at $299 to $319 "buy it now" that didn't sell. I am currently looking for a Les Paul Copy, the Epiphones are good but the headstock shape turns me off, want something closer to the Gibson shape. I am now looking at the Agile copies, a friend has one of the Les Pauls and it very high quality, they sell two levels of their guitars, one at around $299.00 and the other at around $499.00. I think the more expensive models are better than Epiphone, you can buy them through

I have been playing 45 years played gigs in my college days. I have a 1977 strat that I bought in 1980, but it doesn't leave that house, so I buy the cheap stuff to carry around and not have to worry about it. Most of the Korean made guitars can be set up to play as good as any Gibson, and like you my hearing is shot from music and jet engines so the pickups don't matter much.

They probably loaned someone $75 for the Guitar.
I know PRS makes good stuff.Never played one.
I've got a Guild I gave $700 for.Indian Rosewood back and sides.Mahogany neck.

Ibanez makes some wonderful products in this price range.
All guitars in this range are likely imported, often from the same factories - so keep in mind, if you're not "serious" (neither am I), you'll likely never notice the difference, but people who gig with them (and they do - the underpinnings are almost indistinguishable from domestic guitars costing 2 or 3 times the price - the difference is in the fit and finish, quality control and electronics, primarily) almost always upgrade the pickups if nothing else (and often much more).

EVERY company makes shite and EVERY company makes quality.
My first guitar was a $150 Ibanez and I wish I still had it. My 2nd was a PRS Santana SE that wasn't worth half of what I paid for it.
You have to just play around with a bunch and find what you like. Once you do that, THEN you shop. A brand isn't necessarily a sign of quality.
This isn't your first guitar so chances are you know what feels good and what you like. Start there and go with it.

Good God I hate PRS guitars. Total mojo suckholes.
No truly remarkable music has ever been made on a PRS guitar IMO.

Buncha Gretch votes up in here......gotta try and remember where that mofo was, but i know it hadn't gone far. may take a pic of it/post it, all the gretch voters can tell me if that's what they thought it would look like. tell y'all what, it had a buncha bling on it. in the guitar world, 'bout the same as getting a shiny, full, silver, ornate grill.

Personal taste. They are great guitars, though, which is why many great guitarists use them. They are arguably more versatile than Strats. Both songs I posted have them creating pure clean, nearly acoustic-quality tones as well as full metal crunch.

I've never played a single cut though. I could maybe get into one of those, but that's probably just because its so similar to a Les Paul.
I agree that it is personal taste, so if someone likes 'em more power to them.

It's practically a cult - like Martin acoustic owners or Rickenbacker folks.
I'm not knocking them, because Gretch owners rarely seem disatisfied, compared to, say, Fender or Gibson fans who freely cop to the limitations of their choice (and they like them despite that).

Meh - I take a good Taylor or vintage Guild all day and twice on Sundays. But, a lot of this is subjective.

For rockabilly, I guess. I love their basses, but their guitars are kind of limited.
