I heard their album for the first time today.
Holy shite, there singer's voice is atrocious after about two songs.
There's a band out of Austin called Scorpion Child, with a singer in the save range but they kick GFL's arse all day long.

I am excited about the prospect of a potential cover band, Greta Van Vliet with a Trout Mask Replica vibe.

Silverchair is a lot more talented and they were only 15 when there album was released.
Silverchair on SNL (1995)
They were either 15 or 16.

Count me as a fan of these kids, which they are kids and we need to remember that.
As for the performance, the singer started a bit slow but I thought they improved and did a great job. Watching live on TV is hardly ever going to sound as great as if you hear the studio version, or if you are there in person.
I just don't get why some like to shite on them? They sound better than the crappy shite we have today..."hip hop", Nashville pop (which is not country), etc.

Because there is still much better rock music out there, it's just not getting the industry treatment and being force fed. Tons of amazing rock bands have been ignored into oblivion in the last 10 years, yet this pedestrian derivation is somehow going to put rock back into the mainstream? It's laughable. Maybe it's the bluesiest rock that Clear Channel plays, but that's not saying much.

So isn’t your beef with clear channel? When a band breaks into radio airplay while playing a style that’s been long-ignored by those stations, they can pull in a lot better bands behind them. Nirvana was nowhere near the best grunge band, but them breaking through into the mainstream paved the way for dozens other grunge acts that were more talented to do the same.
I’m Greta Van Fleet does for rock n roll to synth pop what Nirvana did to hair metal.

No, this isn't a thread about Clear Channel. Sure, these guys are merely pawns, but that won't make me ignore that they kind of suck. Basically, the argument FOR them always turns to, "well, they're better than 95% of what's out there." That is part of the problem, settling for "sucks a lot less" still ends up with being bombarded by suck.

There is a lot of really good synth pop and electropop out there. Just like good rock, it's typically ignored by the Murcan masses. Like American radio pop, it's very clear that a shite ton of outside production goes into Greta Van Fleet. Unfortunately, SNL may be their biggest live exposure ever, and they were exposed in all the worst ways.

98.1 has been playing that style of music for decades

But they haven’t played any new music in that style in decades. They’re just recycling the same music they were playing 30 years ago.

I saw them live in NOLA and they sounded great, and the lead vocals were awesome. Not sure what happened on SNL and on a recent live video I saw. Gotta wonder if he’s overworking that voice with the way he sings. Bottom line is I still enjoy their studio stuff and could less about how he looks on stage. May need a voice coach to prevent shredding his vocals though.
