I think this next album is extremely important for them. They have to branch out of sound like Zeppelin and find their own sound. It's no doubt they're talented and it would be really nice for a young band to really embrace that classic rock vibe.

I liked their first album, but some of the tracks felt a little meh to me, and sadly, those were the tracks that sounded less like Led Zeppelin. I want them to find their own sound, but they haven't sounded great when they've tried to do so. It's hard when your lead singer sounds so much like Robert Plant.

I’ve seen the shortlist of albums titles. Led Zeppelin II was in the running.

Sounding like Zeppelin isn’t a huge deal by itself. But looking like them and performing like them just...god it irritates me.
I understand being inspired by a group or taking someone else’s shtick and capitalizing on it by doing it better (e.g. what Blink182 did to NOFX/The Descendents).
We went through this shite 10 years ago with Wolfmother and Airborne and The Darkness ripping off 70s/80s bands. It’s cool for about 2 weeks.
ETA: remember Jet? Another rip off band

There’s a metric ton of other young bands more worthy of listening to than Greta Van Fleet.

There are other young bands out there putting out a classic rock vibe but without making it some caricature of what they think classic rock in the 60s and 70s was in there head.
Check out Los Colognes for one that I really like.

I don't get the obsession with GVF on this board. I tried to like them but just can't marginally like more than a couple of their songs.

Who are they a ripoff of? Jet is a really fun band, and other than maybe their breakout hit “Are You Gonna Be My Girl”, they sound pretty unique. There weren’t many bands like them in the 2000’s, which was largely split between nu-metal acts like Linkin Park, Pop Punk bands like Good Charlotte and NFG, emo acts like Panic!, and more adult contemporary groups like Wilco.

Not my style at all, but damn these dudes have a great sound. Just feels honest and familiar without being repetitive.

This is my issue. I think they've put out plenty of solid-to-really good rock songs in their short time.
However, people wouldn't stop telling them how much they sounded like Zeppelin that instead of trying to distinguish themselves they just decided to emulate them. Just look at the difference in what they're wearing in their 1st and 2nd music videos.
Not to mention that all the non-nonsensical hippie sounding crap they like to put out on social media. Their last tour was called March of the Peaceful Army... which I went to by the way and really enjoyed because musically I still think they're very solid.
Highway Tune
Talk on the Street
Black Smoke Rising
When the Curtain Falls
Safari Song
I really enjoy all of those songs, but I mean... c'mon. From this:
To this:
They're not even trying to not be Led Zeppelin anymore. Which is a shame because I do still enjoy their music.

I always think about these bands who are obsessed with a "retro" sound/image.
Led Zeppelin wouldn't exist if they tried to emulate their influences. They'd be a bunch of white dudes dressed in suits and black face trying to look like Muddy Waters.
Nirvana was heavily inspired by Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith. Can you imagine Kurt Cobain dressing up like fricking Jimmy Page? We wouldn't have grunge! (or at least not in the form we know it)
I know there aren't a lot of metal fans around, but I think Trivium's attempt to sound like Metallica (The Crusade) on their second record derailed their career. They went from being THE hottest thrash metal band that was going to save the genre to a fricking joke and they lost a lot of their fanbase because of it IMO.
ETA: that last photo man...those dudes do not go to the grocery store wearing that shite, they don't sit around their house in indian vests listening to vinyl records. They wear sweatpants and play Xbox and hit Winn Dixie like the rest of us
