When you make a GOAT thread, it really shows you have a narrow view of music. It also shows a complete disregard for the different genres of music.

When you tell me someone who plays 4 chord rock and roll is your GOAT (and I love me some 4 chord rock and roll), it really shows how little you know about music.

It's music, not a painting, which means there are correct and incorrect ways of doing things.

Please add genres when making the case for why a musician should be considered the GOAT.

Melt over.

Or, you can stop looking down your nose at the way others perceive and enjoy music. Stop being a gatekeeping douchebag.

I totally agree with you, for two reasons:

1. Guitar is a typical topic for GOAT threads, and yet there are at least three distinct styles of six-string guitar—nylon and steel string acoustic, and electric, and the techniques used for each type of guitar are distinct and varied among the different styles played on each type of guitar. There's no point in trying to rank a classical player vs a rock player. Most GOAT threads are really just FAVORITE threads.

2. Even if you are talking about one genre of music, there's no point in thinking GOAT. Music is not like a race where you can determine one champion. We benefit from the contributions of thousands of great musicians. Some obviously stand out in being technical innovators or in writing great music for the instrument. So I think of ranking musicians as a histogram. Who falls in that top bin of the greatest musicians who made the highest contributions to the guitar and music in general?

My top bin would include players like:

George Sakellariou
Badi Assad
Michael Hedges
Pierre Bensusan
And of course some of my favorite rock players:
Jimi Hendrix
Steve Howe
Eddie Van Halen
Steve Vai
etc.

These people play very different styles of music and use wildly different playing techniques so there's no point in comparing them to each other. To me they all have made great contributions to music and to guitar playing. There's no GOAT, just the top group of players.

Over the target.... I can find talent in all types of music. From George Jones to Mozart, but to act as if some isn't complex and requiring more skill to perform than others is simply ridiculous.

BTW...isn't starting a thread to tell us who the greatest (fill in the blank) of all time means you're doing exactly what I'm being accused of? "Looking down your nose at other truly talented musicians"

The world is full of musicians who can play multiple styles and do so at a high level. Problem is, most of you have never heard of them.

Everybody can have their own personal GOAT...

..as long as his name is Jerry Garcia.

Who's doing that? It's not me. Everyone knows the difference in complexity between Zappa and AC/DC.

Not at all, no one is telling you anything. It's a conversation starter intended to provoke a discussion. With you, it provoked condemnation.

More gatekeeping bullshite. Like you know all of the musicians in all of the genres you want to exclude from GOAT conversations. You're a music snob. Those types of people are universally regarded as huge a-holes.

Most people here hate what I love and create, but I'm used to that. Its been that way since Jr high.

Let your expectations and hopes die, then just use the board as an organic people watching experiment.

GOAT Bluesman - Robert Johnson

Yes, and hopefully more folks will narrow their focus onto the different genres versus these wholesale threads where I'm told that "fill in the blank" is the greatest guitarist of all time. Not the greatest rock guitarist or jazz guitarist, or country guitarist, or jazz guitarist.

No, just one cat who can absolutely play better than anyone regardless of style or genre.

I honestly believe it would make for a better thread.
