Jackson SL2Q
Peavey 6505MH
EVH 5150 III 2x12

On the board:

TC Electronic Polytune 3
Dunlop JC95 Cantrell Wah
Catalinbread DLS3
Walrus Audio Slo
Old Blood Noise Endeavors Dark Star
Catalinbread Belle Epoch
Catalinbread Echorec
Empress Echosystem
Earthquaker Devices Aastral Destiny

Most of my pedals were impulse buys and I rarely play with any effects. In fact if anyone is interested in the Echosystem or Aastral Destiny I'll let them go cheap. I can count the number of times I've used each on one hand.

Someone recommend me a guitar pedal to check out. I'll give you my opinion and maybe buy it.

I’ve owned a bunch of pedals but a couple years ago I downsized quiet a bit. Some pedals currently on my board that I recommend checking out are Fulltone MDV-2, Fulltone RTO, Fulltone Secret Freq, DSL RotoSIM, Retro Sonic Flanger, Line 6 DL4.

Oatmeal, what kind of cabinet is that under the Ampeg? Is that an Ampeg, hard to see?

In other news, I totally redid my pedalboard, complicating things of course.

Went from this:
Two Notes Le Bass tube preamp/DI
Electro-Harmonix tuner pedal
Digitech Drop pedal
Electro-Harmonix Bass Clone chorus pedal
MXR Bass Envelope Filter pedal

To now this:
EHX tuner
EHX Bass Clone
MXR Bass Env. Filter
Tech 21 VT Bass DI
Tech 21 Geddy Lee YYZ
EHX Bass Mono Synth
Keeley Bassist Compressor (boost only, not an always on)
Sushi Box Finally Tube DI

And a new Walrus Audio power supply to replace the cheap piece of crap I had. Having a good power supply made a huge difference in sound quality. Huge.

Yes, Ampeg V4b with a Betgantino 4x12.
The ‘68 Bassman silver face is all original.
I love gear. I don’t even play Bass, just love low end.

Are those Calftone heads? What is your opinion of them?

Also, how about a closeup of that rack if you don’t mind? A list will do as well.

Fulltone MDV-2 - I'm a big fan of uni-vibe pedals. This seems good. I like that the pedal and expression are combined. Sounds about as good as a modern uni vibe can be. They sell a new version now.

Fulltone RTO - Description on the fulltone site seemed great. I looked into the pedal and it sounds just like the the 60s is a box. Would be excellent for blues players. Has a "wide" tone.

Fulltone Secret Freq - Has a tighter, meaner and more moderm tone than the RTO. Can get some interesting tones.

DSL RotoSIM - I knew I was going to like this pedal. Great Leslie pedal.

Retro Sonic Flanger - sounded great. Very broad range of tones.

Line 6 - I have, its good.

Nice feedback on all. I’m a fan of Trower and Gilmour so my pedal choices favor their effects sounds. I use the Secret Freq for the cocked wah effect. I have a Fulltone Clyde Wah but don’t have the space on my board so I use the smaller Freq instead.

A pedal I didn’t mention but really like is my Loop Master. I use it in my home studio for recording when I want to combine my signal through 2 miked amp cabs. I can set them up with different tones or effects and layer the sound being recorded. For example one amp set to a slight over driven break up and the other clean with modulation pedal or reverb effects. I got the idea of recording that way when I saw an old interview from Trower back in late 70s early 80s era where he was splitting his signal playing live using a Fender head for his clean sound and a Marshall for the dirty. I don’t think he does that any longer. But he’s still out there touring and churning out albums.

they are Calftone heads. Evans kick with the dampening ring is the tits. soft low kick that doesn't' ring out. the Toms are same. floor tom has an 16" kick head on it, so it has the same ring dampening effect and I love it.

Focusrite ADAT Octopre
Focusrite Clarette 8preX
Flickinger twin Flix stereo
Altec 1589B mono 2->1
Art Pro MPAII stereo
Art Pro MPAI stereo
Altec 9470A (Gruning Audioworks racked) stereo
Altec 1592a 5->1
WA Tone beast mono

I added a tegeler Creme and I have the Neve 2254A stereo and the Neve 31119 stereo Pres at the house.

Do you put dampening ring heads on the resonant side? I have an Aquarian reso head with a felt strip across it but not a ring (like I do on the batter head). Sounds good to my ears but can get kinda boomy depending on what I mic it with. I don’t have any other dampers on the kick right now.

Not sure I’ve run across this one before (these are pres?) What do they compare to?

I’m familiar with the Altec brand but not much else about them. How do you use them? Tracking? Mixing out of the box on a 2-bus chain? Both?

Have heard some good things about this one. Price point is very nice also.

Yowza

I’ve got an 8-channel front end setup. API x4 & Neve Portico x4 into Lynx AD/DA. I don’t have any more hardware other than Dbx 160A x2 that I don’t use a whole lot these days and aren’t in my main rack. With a Dangerous D-Box for monitoring I get by on a simple 4u rig and do everything else in the box. Would rather spend the $$$$ on mics.

the rings go on the attack side. try them out. they aren't expensive, but they really make a difference. I do the Drum tech at the Carroltton Station and put these on their house kit, and it's made a huge difference.

the twin Flix are the reincarnation of the original Flickinger console. look that one up, great story there. mine are serial number 7.

Altec has some nice stuff. all of this is vintage as they have changed over to the Altec Lansing company and mainly put out garbage these days. this stuff isn't too sought after, but the price points were nice and they add a nice color or texture to the sounds. think not super clean, has some grit to it, but plenty of firepower behind it.

these are all solid state Pres that I use for tracking, mostly Drums. the Ampeg Bass Head along with the Altec solid state pre are a match made in heaven. Last Hope Studio Nola has a sound cloud page, so if you want to hear some samples,(shameless plug) they are there for the enjoyment.

I bought the Creme for my birthday and just recently got it set up and in the chain. so far so good. the EQ is just a boost, no cuts, and the Compression is really nice.

do you run the DBX into your Drum bus? or in parallel? I've heard that's a nice use for them. I've used the plug in and it's meh.

you wanna switch gears to mics?

I bought a Lawson L47 a few years ago and that is THE Mic. obviously a real 47 is out of the picture, and this is as close as you can get.

I’m right there with you. Also impressive list of gear. I have a 2013 iMac that freezes and locks up intermittently while using my DAW. Have everything backing up with a passport for now. My goal is to have a Mac Studio M1 ordered in the next few months. Earlier this year I had planned on getting the newest 27” iMac until Apple replaced it with Studio. I already have a Magic Mouse and keyboard and after market monitor to use with Studio.

I want to go stereo with my setup but I don't want to spend the money lol. I recently learned of multiple guitarists who use a wet/dry or wet/dry/wet setup.

I've got everything I need to backup and offsite. My wife just informed me 20 minutes ago that my M1 is due next Friday...so yeah thats pretty awesome. I'm also using my original keyboard, mouse and trackpad along with the Apple Cinema Display...had to buy an adaptor for the Mini DisplayPort. Fingers crossed.

Biggest issue now, is I don't have an interface to use with the M1, plus we're going to be moving to a small town in Nowhere to help care for my wife's parents ( the new studio gear is my compensation for giving up civilization). I could use the time, I suppose, to streamline my workflow...but I'll probably just play my guitar more.

The M1 should be able to handle my modest requirements for years to come. I rarely have more than 16-20 tracks on any given composition. Really pumped about the BigSix. I can sum the tracks and reroute them back to it and put that SSL compression on the busses. I'm hoping to up the sound quality of my work.

I’d really like to hear about your experience with this. Not sure why SSL would’t make a “BigEight” since the X-Desk was discontinued but I assume they know what they are doing.

I think it’s more an iteration of the Six console which was quite popular. It’s currently on back order everywhere except Thomann, and I’m leery of such an expensive item from Germany, even though their rep is solid.

I’m also gearing up for a move of some distance and most things are being torn down, instead of being built…but we’ll see. I’m sure there will be a curve as well, so I’ll eventually get back to you!
