Not playing a musical instrument, that's for sure. Clapton could probably play the bass better with his feet.
And I wouldn't agree that Gilmour "wastes" Clapton - although I prefer Gilmour's guitar work to Clapton's, generally.

I really don't think either is worth a damn without the either. Waters lacked Gilmour's musicality while Gilmour lacked Water's, I don't know, magic or something. I just don't really care for Floyd's post Water's work. It just feels by the numbers and lacks that 5th circuit inspiration that Water's brought.

both or neither, why do i have to pick one? Both are integral to the band and great. Though Waters creative output is better, he is a gianormous dick and tried to frick over his "friends" and business partners, so i understand why they wanted to go on without him. The 5 LP run of Meddle, DSOTM, WYWH, Animals and the Wall is arguably the greatest run in rock history. But imo Momentary Lapse of Reason and the Division Bell are on par with The Final Cut or any of Waters solo stuff.

Waters wasted Clapton, not Gilmour. Clapton played on the Hitch-hiking album and then on the subsequent tour. Both were a total waste of his time and talents.

what is interesting is that in recent years Gilmour has turned into an insufferable old grumpy man who is plain tired of all things Floyd and nearly killed the Endless River idea numerous times even as it had progressed fairly well through production all because he wasnt interested. all of this despite this being dedicated to his good friend Rick Wright following his passing.
on the other hand it is Waters who has seemed to mellow appropriately in his older age and seen the error of some of his decisions and ways of handling things in the 80s. he will always have an edge to his personality but i have grown to enjoy his current nostalgic view of the band. they really have seemed to flip flop with their views on the band if you listen to all of the more recent interviews.
it is just too bad they couldnt reach a happy medium back 20 years ago. at the end of the day any floyd fan should be thankful for the brief reunions we did witness at live8 and the waters wall show. special moments for sure and nice to see them outwardly and genuinely being friendly with one another. things no floyd fan would have honestly thought possible if they were being truthful with themselves.

waters was the creative force behind PF and gilmour gave the color to the sound, so to speak.
waters is where all of the great ideas came from, not gilmour IMO, although gilmour is very much a better musician than waters.

In exchange for Waters' performance at a charity event, Gilmour appeared at a Wall show of Waters in May 2011 - that is likely the last time we'll ever see more than 2 members of Pink Floyd on the same stage at the same time. Mason is the go between, as he has no ego to assuage - Mason and Wright seemed to be the reasonable ones, caught between the 2 a$$holes - I've always liked Gilmour better, but you have a point about the flip-flopping - there is another famous British band with that kind of vibe going on - Led Zeppelin (although, I maintain, the whole, "Talk to the Capricorns" was just a smokescreen).
Waters cannot stand Gilmour, personally, and vice versa - they both respect each other musically, and that's why we got the occasional get together since 2005.
