FTR, I only listed Grateful Dead because some a-hole always does on this topic. I just figured I'd be the a-hole this time.

I thought the Top 40 was usually the standard, but it's open to interpretation. Here's what wiki says:
"In the U.S., a "pure" one-hit wonder is an artist that manages only one song on the Billboard Hot 100, regardless of the song's peak position. However, most American music industry insiders consider a song in the top forty positions of the Billboard Hot 100 to be a hit."

Ok but how about a hypothetical here. Say next year Widespread Panic puts out a single that reaches, lets say number 39 on the charts (highly unlikely I know but thats why this is hypothetical). Would they be a one hit wonder? Even with their extremely successful live career and their extremely loyal following? I don't think so, that is not the definition of a one hit wonder to me.

Although even within the parameters that you listed grateful dead is not a one hit wonder.

Depends on your definition. See the disagreement on FNM in this thread.

Like I said a one hit wonder is a band that is known by one song and one song only.

Even people who have never heard a Grateful Dead song knows who they are and the scene they embodied.

That is not a one hit wonder.

I'm not really arguing your point. This gets debated all the time, everyone makes the same arguments, no consensus is reached. It's purely what the individual understands the term 'one hit wonder' to be.

This link is from wiki so take it FWIW, just showing that the argument is out there. LINK

There is an argument out there that states that the world is run by lizard people working for the illumunati....

That doesn't make the people who use that argument any less crazy

Having a stricter view of what's a one hit wonder is hardly comparable to believing in lizard people. I guess we can agree to disagree.

Actually believing that the Grateful Dead is a one hit wonder is probably crazier than believing in lizard people....

By standard industry definition, they had one hit. It's not so hard to see why some would consider them one hit wonders. I don't consider them to be, but I don't have to agree with some one to believe they have valid points. I do think people of that opinion are overlooking the 'wonder' part, which I think implies 'flash in the pan'(as in 'where are they now' types).

Several of the bands usually present in the Rolling Stone, VHI, etc.. lists, actually have large, loyal, fanbases, and several other minor hits. Devo comes to mind. Faith No More was already mentioned.

Faith No More is not a one-hit wonder.

Oh, add "99 Luftballoons" by Nena and "Cars" by Gary Numan to this list.
