That isn't the full, nor accurate, quote.

The reporter's question was about the Beatles selling more records than the Bible that year. John was quipping a non-serious answer.

He said this during a live show, that another musician gave him this advice when he was starting out. I think it was Keith Sykes, but I'm not positive. That might have just been part of his bit though. Later on in the show he followed with this >

He also talks about the challenge of doing a solo concert covering a full Beatles album…
“It’s intimidating, but it’s also great because if it goes badly and you guys don't like it... I can just look at you and say, ‘Well, I didn't write this shite.’”
