It's interesting what some refer to as blues. Can songs by Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Jonny Lang be far behind.

pick anything by Lightnin Hopkins and ya have a 75% chance of it being essential blues
One of the SRVs has to make any list, Texas Flood, Tin Pan Alley, etc
Something Albert King is a must, BUABS mentioned, add Everybody wants To Go To Heaven
Albert Collins 'Dirty Dishes'... Tab Benoit does an incredible rendition, holler it out at his show and he'll always play it

It's obvious who actually listens to the blues and who doesn't. SRV, Howlin Wolf, Buddy Guy, Albert Collins, and Muddy are my favorites. Let's not forget BB or Freddie King. Hendrix probably could have been the all time best blues guitarist had he recorded more; that guy was incredible. But the one song that is my favorite is Clapton's 'Ain't Gone N' Give Up On Love' from the SRV tribute concert. That is from another planet.
